it allows more air, but also allows larger particles along with more air. When over-oiled, a drop-in K&N can easily gunk up your MAF sensor and trigger a SES light. I prefer the cheapo paper filters with the metal borders.

just wondering, but wouldnt some of the particles be burned away in the motor?

If that was the case, cars wouldn't come with air filters from the factory. Particles like sand will not burn at engine temps, it will scratch your cylinder walls, contaminate your oil, and get in engine bearings and stuff...

Hey. . .how 'bout the JWT Pop Charger filter? It seems to have larger surface area, but may also allow more particulate. . any thoughts on this?I've had it on my 97 240sx for the last 90k miles with no side effects. . I'm wondering how it'd work out on the VG33E -- sort of new to this engine.

the intake would give some performance gains, but the difference is that you can't offroad your 240. Go offroading once and your entire engine, including popcharger filter, would be coated in mud and dirt... depends on how much you care....

ACTUALLY. . . I figured I'd buy a Pathy / QX4 because I DO offroad my 240 I figured that maybe I should do it right.

Good call though . . I'll stick with OEM or similar.
