Help please...

I installed a K&N cone filter onto the stock 240SX intake (with the help of an adapter ~$25).

Only one problem: originally, there was another hose connected to the air intake (for relieving back pressure? - it goes straight into the exhaust system as far as I could figure) that is currently disconnected and is drawing unfiltered air. Is this something I should worry about, or will it function fine on unfiltered air? I realize it may be a stupid question, but I'm just getting started with all of this.

Also, if the connection to the filter is absolutely necessary, does anybody have a way of doing it? I spent 2 hours looking at plumbing connections, and ended up with something that could work (after some labour), but I'm always open to new ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help.

the hose that connects to the stock airbox, goes over to a small black box, then into a metal thing, then into the exhaust?it the AIV system. word is it lets fresh air into the exhaust for some reason. sometimes, on older cars (like ours) the metal reeds inside the device get stuck and let exhaust back into the intake. bad engine performance ensues.

you can remove the system all together, or just throw a breather filter on it.

Thanks for your help, corn322.I ended up custom-making a setup ($13CAD from Home Depot) and connecting the AIV system as well. Took me the best part of an hour, on top of the 1 hour I spent hunting for parts. If it stops working, then I'll consider unplugging it and going back to just having the filter connected to the air intake.

On the subject of the K&N cone filter, the S14 I just bought had one pre-installed by the previous owner. What I can't figure out is how it would be of any benefit.

I see that the stock airbox connects to the air intake scoop in the grille, which I assume draws in cold air with pretty good efficiency. The cone filter naturally does not use this scoop, and even worse the scoop is in the way of the cone filter. Should one remove that scoop entirely, or should I just reconnect the stock airbox? It seems that the stock unit would provide better airflow, but I got the car 2 days ago, so I'm *very* new to all of this.

Thanks.

no problem. if the AIV starts giving problems, you can also take it apart and clean it.

HashiriyaGDB:

the K&N cone filter is very good. K&N's work like this:regular paper filters are just that. paper. try breathing through a peice of paper. well, not really. but you get my idea. they're just really loose knit (for lack of a better phrase), thick paper folded up to increase the surface area.

K&N filter it made of cotton. breath through a cotton t-shirt. much easier than the paper. even though breathing through a sheet of paper is exactly not what paper air filters are like. now, the cotton has some pretty big holes between the strands of cotton that make up the filter. much larger than in the paper filter. K&N makes up for this by using a special oil impregnated onto the cotton filter that catches all the dirt.

unfortunatly, I am not familiar with the S14, so I can't help you with the intake stuff.

Try to get the stock air box lid from the previous owner or junk yard and make a homemade heat shield with it, when i bought my K&N filter i realized that even though i flows better it was just going to be sucking up hot air from inside the engine bay, so i got a 90 degree PVC pipe and an intake coupling to point the filter forward and used the air box lid to make a heat shield, and since the filter is towards the front of the car it can get cold air from that ram air scoop you're talking about and from the hole where the resonator box used to be.

Cool, I still have the stock airbox, I'll have to try that.

Thanks.
