I figured this would be the right thread for this since..................... yea

I've read through the forums and found that most of you are replacing your stock air filter with a K&N drop in air filter? Which filter are you guys talking about? Is it the the air filter that goes inside the box, or is it a cone filter like apexi? Is this the drop in K&N air filter everyone is talking about?

also, how bad does k&n air filter poop on the mafs? and does it cause problems down the line?

drop in would be the one that goes inside the box, hence "drop in"

Now that I'm done being an ***, the drop-in & cone will not matter.

Drop-in seems like it may work a little better - there is a cold air duct below the air box toing thru the filter. When you do cone, you remove this ducting, unless you carefully reroute/rig up a new routing system.

The cone should give you a nicer lil "scream" when you start flooring it - this is if you don't have a header/exhaust setup, otherwise that will override most of the noise.

The k&n will do fine as long as you regularly clean it (don't listen to that 100k no maintenance thing, if you read the fine print, it will say "clean as needed"/etc). Clean it as often as you feel necessary depending on the conditions you drive in - i.e. from every oil change to once a year.

The only problem w/ the k&n is that it is an oil type filter, so that sort of limits the amount of air that can come thru & if not cleaned/taken care of properly, can lead to no performance gain at all. This is where the Greddy Airinx or whatever dry type cleanable filter comes in.

It really all boils down to preference. We are probably talking 2-3whp difference here at most if you are staying n/a.

Dude, here is a great free mod.

Remove air box and discard the plastic y pipe. Get a hole saw or step drill and drill holes in the bottom front half of the air box.

Do not drill the top half (above the filter) - duh.

The y pipe looks like it brings in fresh air but is way too small and really just cuts down noise.

You now have a good free flow intake for almost free - sounds cool too.

airbox can be seen if you remove your fender lining on the driver's side and look where the air intake is. The y-pipe is attached to it.

Basically, it's below your air intake box.

hey im guessing the previous owner has already removed the y-pipe on my car... on the side of my air box there is like a large oval-like opening. does this mean the previous owner already removed the y-pipe?

Yes, the y pipe would attach there. Drill holes in that same section to open it up a little more.

No dude, you need at least 3/4" holes - buy a step drill bit.
