What advantages does the JWT TCU have over shifting the car manually from 1st thru Drive?

Will the JWT TCU drop to a lower gear if the RPMs drop to 2500?

It's nice not to have to shift manually, I'd think. It's a first gear start (without flooring it), and hold shifts longer.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to get the TCU and not the ECU, or vice versa.

If you have the hi shift TCU and not the ECU, you'll hit the rev limiter before it shifts at full throttle. If you have the ECU and not the TCU, it will shift before the peak hp point. I have both and am completely satisfied. As far as manual shifting, if you have the ECU manual shifting will still not let you reach the power peak and I don't believe it will allow you to downshift as readily either.

Thanks... you said it better than me!

Since both are $1000-1200 (together, $500-600 each), also have to wonder if it's worthwhile on a nearly 12 year old car. Not that I'm easing my '92 Q into retirement mode..... but saving my $$$ to fix things, not relive its younger years.

I would probably get it. I wish there was an upgrade for the TCU on the J. It's shifting characteristics have really been getting on my nerves lately, rolling stop and goes start from 3rd gear and you have to be at a complete stop for a couple seconds before 1st comes in. It's also slow thinking almost hestitant about wanting to GO rather than save gas. But that was it's original intention probably.

While I can't speak specifically for a 92, I can say that the ECU/TCU combo was absolutely the best $$$ I ever spent on my 90Q.

It really changed the character of the car and made even everyday driving much more fun. Now if BAD would ever release that supercharger kit, Hmmmm.

I talked with a friend who has a 91 Q with the ECU and not the TCU, he shifts his car manualy and says that it works fine, I would have to agree because if you are shifting manually then you control when you want the next gear change, and as far as the down shift when you apply enough throttle pressure the Q will down shift, my only reason for wanting the TCU would be for making the Q downshift without so much throttle pressure, I will purchase the ECU and wait on the TCU and instead put that money into my braking system. Just my .02:D

OK, Whats the way to go. 90 Q, bone stock, runs good. should I buy the 93 chip (fairly cheep $150) , or the JWT ECU and TCU (about $400 and $600 respectively? I know they go together but say I was to buy a 93 TCU first, then I get the JWT ECU down the road, do I still need the JWT TCU or am I good?

The 93 chip is most cost effective, but if you have that and get the ECU later the trans will shift before the engine hits peak power, negating some of the effect of the ECU.

mayhem- i bet we could use the 300zx TCU on the J30, the transmissions are almost identical mechanically, probably identical electronically.

Talk with aaacomp. He has the above mentioned ECUs and TCUs at a better price.
