Will a JWT ECU set up for a 91-93 Q work in a 95 or are there differences?

You can't just hapzardly replace an ecu from [90-93] in 94-95.

The base programs are different: 49 state or California, Standard TCS, ACTIVE or combinations. You must make sure that the ecu type before the JWT mods is compatible in year , location, and options.

Most just send their ecu in and have the WOT chip [programming] changed.

i found out mine was a CA car through JWT. after sending in the ECU speed doctor informed me that mine was CA spec. After getting the Service History Report(probably the easist way that I know of) and seeing that the original dealer was located in L.A. I assumed it was true. differences...??? I got my History report from the dealer.

If memory serves, the VIN will tell you the edition of the car. The legend is in the service manual.

You can also check the emissions sticker under the hood... the CA models say something like "...conforms to all applicable U.S. EPA and CA emissions standards." The catalyst part number is different as well.

Fred, yeah, speed doc had my ecu. the NICO store man! discount discount. i guess he plays the middle man or something with JWT.

OK - Well here's the deal then. Glenn (used to spend a lot of time here on the board) has an ECU for sale real cheap. He has a 91 (std) Q. Since I can't use it, maybe someone else is interested.

I'd love to do the ECU upgrade, but I can't see parting with more than $200 or so right now... Damn budget.

from maxima.org

" Is my Cali or Fed spec? Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada V = California U = US, not California

What's the difference between CA and non-CA models besides the extra temp sensor? I'd love to buy Fred's non-CA ECU for my CA Q with HICAS. Would I get a check-engine light? Decreased performance? Just to confirm, the TCU should work regardless of the ECU, right?

The CA ecu have some extra softtware to try and monitor things more closely [set check engine lights easier] by evaluating individual O2 sensor pulses against individual injectors to see if one is leaking.......iffy as to if it works.

The EGR temp sensor tries to fine tune the EGR mixture to further reduce Nox emissions at cruise.......no effect at WOT or idle...............but as everyone knows CA cars are less responsive.

I have a 95Q which I'm going to check the codes under the hood to see, but I belive it's a non CA. Car becuase it was first sold in NY.

My question is am I going to have a hard time passing SMOG? Which I have to get done next month to register.

I recall Q45 tech saying that the JWT chip was optimized for the 90-93Q so the 94-95 would not see as much gain. Plus the fact that I'm in CA. Which seems to further reduce gains, leads me to believe a 94-95Q in CA. Will probably see half the power increase as a early Q outside CA. Is this true?

But magazine chassis dyno test on a CA 1994 Q built by Stillen showed a 22 lb/ft rear wheel increase with JWT modified 1994 oem CA ecu..............just shy of 10% increase.

Most CA parameters have nothing to do with WOT acceleration because this is exempt from EPA and CAFE regulations..........any pre OBD2 engine can spew as much crud as it wants above 3000 rpm.

All 1990 [every brand] cars brought into [registered in] California must be brought into CA [CAFE] compliance.

I brought my 1990 into CA from MD earlier this year. It was smog inspected as a 49 state car. The CA test is part visual/functional (are the pieces the book says should be there really there, and do they work). Then there are emissions tests at idle and 2500rpm. On this basis the Q failed. The EGR had clogged up during the cross country drive. It passed the emissions part. I took the TB and EGR off and gave it a thorough cleaning, then had it reinspected. The emission numbers barely budged, so I assume the test is not very real world.

CA will soon convert to a measurement only test like MD. There they never raise the hood-just put the car on the dyno. Dealers thus have the opportunity to get another $100K of equipment to stay in the smog check business. When the new law come into effect inspection fees will rise. Don't worry though-this is not a tax.

I hadn't heard about any changes to the smog testing. Why should it cost more if they're going to be doing less work?

I referred him to the state attorney general for fraud-he sold me a ECU and sway bar that were junk and also screwed up my ECU so I bought a new one from JWT.

Mine works very well. Even 1qckser liked the added pep in Zenobia's step.

No complaints.

DAEDALUS-

My smog inspector-the Union station next to where we get our 911 serviced, told me about the new equipment. I asked if he was going to invest, and he said he was waiting to see how much they'd be able to charge to recover the outlay.

If you're talking about the Bay Area going to Smog II (or whatever they call it) standards, smog places do have to buy an expensive dyno to do a more extensive measurement test, but they still do a visual inspection. Based on my experience with it living in the Central Valley, the visual part is harder with it rather than easier. I had inspectors fail me for things on a modified car I used to own that I would have never dreamed they'd find.

I have a Federal emissions J30 ( based on emissions sticker as well as the model ID plate) but it was supposedly sold first in California....(according to Carfax)...
