hey folks im new to the forums here and i was just wondering your opinion on this:

http://www.cardomain.com/id/boostingsil80

im seriously looking into buying this car...however, the car i own now: http://www.cardomain.com/id/lonewolf5038

was impounded when i took it to inspection (long story stolen trans look on hondaswap.com if your interesting in the ongoing drama) so Im looking at getting this sil80 as a daily driver/project car...however i really dont wanna deal w/ the NJ inspection system giving me a rough time i was wonderin if any of you know about the legality of the s13 front swap also do is any of hte other stuff that was done illegal? In addition, if any of you think its fishy, the work isnt quality, or if something just doesnt look rite let me know i appreciate your opinions on this :help

p.s. the car is shown w/ plates but in the email from the owner he said the car was not registerd the guys english is pretty poor so i really dont know what he means. he owned the car for 3 months and most of the time it was in the shop but he claims he did the mods himself (im assuming by "shop" he meant for hte s13 conversion) idk it just is a little strange but im assuming its just a misunderstanding...his response to my email follows:

"I had this car for 3 months and most fo the time the car was been in a shop. I bought this car to do KA turbo and I almost have everything till something terrible happen to me and make me have to sell the car. I have never take this car to the track or abusing it because the car is not register. I bought the car totally stock and I put all the things in myself and run around the block, no where else, everything on the car is pretty much brand new. The car have clean title and no accident. You can check out the car anytime you want but I will not garanteed for long because I already have several emails and I dont know when the car will be sold. First come first serve basis. "

1) This will be a biased question because of course this is a 240SX forum. I say get the 240SX because its a better car than the Civic, IMO. It already has better performance.2) If you get the 240, dont put all the neon undercar lights under it. That makes the car sad.

well i figured as much but i also figured you folks would be able to tell a bad conversion from a good one and tell me things to look out for.

and neons on a 240 ugh...perish the thought i was gonna get an sr or a ca for it and pretty much leave it as is and have some fun w/ it

That's a damn nice Civic sabocrates. Kudos for not having riced it out.

As far as a 240 project, I am in favor of finding a stock car and modding it myself. No worries about dealing with other people's **** ups. Don't ask me how I came to that conclusion.

Check our buy/sell/trade section for 240's. It is very active. I've found two great cars for myself that way.

thanks for the complements and the advice i already checked but heres the thing i need a 240 already in jersey 91-93 5spd all power options generally in good shape

...strangely enough that sil80 is the only car ive been able to find

a friend of mine has a spare 89 240 i can use for spare parts to get it thru inspection should the need arise (that 240 only has like exhaust and an intake) and ill just give him the FMIC and teh turbo from this car inexchange plus a little cash and he'll help me swap in the sr/ca when the time comes snice he already has done his own sr swap

does it sound fishy to you guys?

It seems to be very clean. Except that stupid painted hood. I wouldn't give 4500 for it 3500 tops IMO.

I am his friend as mentioned.... anyway, does anyone know if the s13 conversion has DOT approved lights? I know this is wierd, but i got 180 tails and they have DOT numbers...despite not being sold here. I also know it won't pass inspection if they check the DOT number...anyone have the conversion or happen to know?

I would like to take this time and be grateful I live in the south and we do not have all of this inspection bs. At least not here and not yet. Hopefully never will.

at any rate if any of you folks know of a 240 in good shape that (91-93 all options 5spd) i can definately get thru NJ inspection lemme know

ive definately got the drift itch

i was considering an MR2 (91-95) but i hear theyre quite problematic and tend to be hard to repair so i definately think that a 240 w/ a ca or sr swap is my best option for drifting

unless anyone knows of a good 86 for sale ;-)

well i went and looked at that 240 and its in really nice shape mechanically the interior is clean as is the engine bay...the only issues w/ the car were the following:

-rust underneath the spoiler-the right headlite goes out but comes back on w/ highbeams (just mite b a burned out bulb)

the cars title is from Maryland

does anyone know about the deal w/ buying cars w/ out of state title (would this be a 3rd party title or something)?

Mine had the exact same problems when I bought it. I just replaced the headlight bulb, and it fixed that, and the rust under the spoiler is a common 240 problem. If worse comes to worst, just get a new hatch (which I am in the process of doing). If everything else looks good (and above all else, you are comfortable with the seller), then I'd say go for it.

thanks the problems w/ the car are minor its just i find it odd that the car isnt titled or or anything

would it be a hassle for me to title and insure it from MA to NJ?

If he didn't sign the back of the title when he bought the car and the space is still open then you could sign it and it should work just like buying any car. Thats here in tennessee though. I'm sure it would work in NJ as well.

You have two options for the 86, buy a rusted out POS 86 and pay too much for it, OR buy a restored 86 and pay way WAY too much for it. ;)

You shouldn't have any problem with an out-of-state title. The process for titling and plating the car should be the same, but your BMV will probably insist on verifying the VIN upon titling/plating the car.

Hatch rust is commonplace. My hatch was garage-kept it's entire life and it still had it. You'll just have to deal with it if you get it, or find a southern car but there are still no guarantees. Just a bad design from the factory.

As for what else to look for, just do it like any other. Make sure the title is clean, body panels line up, engine doesn't overheat, hesitate or miss, etc.

since im relatively new to all this...i was wondering how i should set it up...

-keep the ka-swap sr-swap ca

i dont really know whick would b best but im all for the sr20det swap...unless you folks know of any reason why not to

id like to hear what the pros and cons are of each swap since i am relatively a noob to all this but you just cant beat first hand testimony when it comes to engine swapping

Man if you search you will find all sorts of stuff on either swap. I personally prefer the ca cause it has that whole iron block thing and is not as common as the sr, but the sr has gotten so big that the aftermarket for it is quite nice. The ka has its good and bad points as well. I'm planning on building my ka24e because I like the daily driveabilty and what not. Just want a bit more power.

With the title issue, I bought my car from NJ and the process just went straight the MVA just like any other title. I just went in with the NJ title and walked out with temp. tags and my new title in the mail.
