R U serious? if u dont have a BOV the compressed air will hit the closed TB then go into reverse and hit the spinning turbine which will cause it to slow down and possibly stoping the turbine which will make exhaust pressures go crazy and destroy the engine. so no its not a must but if u dont have 1 u'll be going through engines on a daily basis.

A very useful beginners guide can be found here ...

http://www.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

Just read each page and select "Next Page" at the bottom. It covers BOVs and WGs.

You won't kill your motor, but you'll damage the turbo if your running high boost. Alot of older turbo cars didn't use a BOV and ran for years with no problems. You run into difficulty when you raise the boost. You can get a nice Bosch unit for 50 bucks.

1g DSM BOV, $25 from a junkyard, will hold 18psi without leaking. It's too cheap NOT to put on.

I ran with no bov @ 5psi on my lude for a couple weeks. no problems. Greddy kits dont always come with BOV's. Basically they allow for longevity of the turbo, and makes recovering boost between shifts faster becuase the turbo doesnt slow down as much. Oh yeah, cool sounds too!

BOV is an external wastegate. Pressure can be released through an internal wastegate as well, but the bov sounds so much cooler.
