WOW nice! What color did you paint the valve cover? I think I might want to do that now.

I sanded off the paint with 150 grit sandpaper, then used paint and varnish remover to get into the odd spots. I used 320 on it after and a sanding block that has about 600 grit on it.. Then I used an orbital polisher (3500rpm) and after that a hand sander with a polishing pad (I didnt use any chemicals). After I got the effect I was looking for I clear coated them to prevent rust. It took me about 20 hours worth of work so im just letting you know now that unless you invest time into it, it prolly wont turn out the way you want it to.

PS. the pictures just don't do justice. They look alot better in person. I can actually see myself pretty clearly in the reflection of the covers.

we could sandblast it first I bet that would cut down on alot of the time removing the old paint...

yeah, a bead blaster with different types of media could knock that down to about 2-3 hours.

LOL, do not ever... EVER. spray that stuff with shorts on! Burns the hair off your legs that stuff is no joke. wear gloves too... but yeah it takes the paint off the valve covers nicely if you don't have access to a media/sand blaster.

Hold on...I thought this was the "plastic motor".

The valve cover is actually metal? Does this paint remover work to get dirt off the motor too?

Everything is metal on it...valve covers, timing covers... The paint remover just removes paint. It's a gel and it just dissolves the paint. Makes it literally just peel up and you can brush it off. A plastic putty knife helps. But yeah, do NOT get that **** on your skin. I was removing the paint on a valve cover with that stuff and a steel brush and I was working it hard and some drops got splattered on my arm. I didn't notice it until it was burning the hell out of me. Dangerous stuff....

i used that stuff on my wifes sentra hood(when she wrecked it ) got it all over my face. i was using the big jug that you spray with a paint gun. the wind got a bunch of it and sprayed it all over me. hurt worse than the time i got carb cleaner in my eye.

wtf? go kick whoever told you that in the nuts...

and no *paint* remover doesn't remove dirt too... it peels the paint off. Get carb cleaner to clean dirt off, or simple green, or engine bright...

I dont mean to pollute the forum here, but the "plastic motor" thing was from NICO back in 1999. It was in an old FAQ i read im pretty sure and was told it was a common idea...

thats some weird stuff right there... I can't say I've ever heard of people thinking the CA had plastic covers... some new sentra motors have a black plastic valve cover, but thats the only nissan I can think of off the top of my head.

it got the name plastic motor because it looks.. plasticy. The red valvecovers, the black coilpack cover, they look plasticy.. when you just look at pictures and have never seen one in person.
