Hi folks,

It’s been a while since I visited here. Family and multiple jobs keep me too busy nowadays but I’m slowly working myself back in. Hope everyone’s doing okay and the Nissan / Infinitis are still humming along. Boy things have changed around here.

Lately my main mode of transportation has been a Dodge truck while the Q takes a rest in the garage. I drive her on weekends though. Of course, ya’ll know this leading up to some sort of dilemma so here it is.

While the Q sat, I decided to fix a few things that were bugging me. I changed out the AC Display which was blank and also not keeping the temperature right. I found a post where someone had flexed the IC card rendering the display viewable again. I changed my display to a used display (freebie) which also had the readout problem (but kept the temp right) and flexing the board brought it back as stated. Many thanks to whoever that was.

A few years ago, I had changed out the speedometer on my cluster. The new speedo worked but along the way, something happened to my digital odometer display and I didn’t realize this until after putting everything back together. Well, I drove it like that until now.

I ordered new odo bulbs (yes, it’s digital but uses bulbs at the back) from Scottsdale, installed them in the display hoping this might fix it… then I made my dumb error. The car had been sitting in the sun and I had it running with the AC on as I tried to put back in the cluster. (Yes, just shoot me cause I do know better). It was my intention to disconnect the battery before reassembly but I completely forgot. I guess the AC was feeling too good. While twisting and turning the cluster to get it in, I think a metal cover at the back of it shorted out on the exposed ignition wiring on the steering column. I heard nothing, smelled nothing but noticed that the AC had turned off suddenly which is when it clicked in my thick head that I had the car running.

Now the AC display unit does not light up or work at all, the car is not charging from the alternator, none of the gauges work and God knows what else. The console and cluster lights are working when I turn on the headlights. The car starts and runs but I don’t keep it on long since the alternator is not charging. This is a new dealer alternator that I installed over the summer. I’ve checked fuses etc. but found nothing. I think the power steering stopped working too. I’m hoping I may just need to change a relay/s but I’m not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Cuss me if you wish but only if you can help :(

My next option will be to flatbed it to the dealer if no solution is found (now the tears start).

You will have to use the manual to check the connections at the alternator. If voltage is not present at the correct terminals the alternator will not charge. Check the fuses in the engine compartment and under dash.

This turned out to be a simple fix. One of the plugs behind the cluster was not snapped in all the way and caused all these symptoms. The car is running great again. Trip Odo is lit too!
