well, i got (starting w/ #1 cyl) 162, 164, 109, 166. i would have figured that the #4 cyl would be the problem, as thats where it is spewing oil from. the head is coming off tomorrow regardless, so its of little concern but i was wondering what you guys think the problem might be. it took it a really long time to make it to 109 as well, about 5 times the amount it took to get the compression in the other 3. im off to continue pulling the car apart. ill let you know if i find anything else seriously awry.

Either a valve has been burned, a valve is not seating, you have a broken valve spring or a cracked piston.

its gotta be something valve related. i checked and all the springs look to be in fine shape. this head is still less than 40k miles old.

anyway, im just about to pull off the head, so we will find out the problem soon enough. i must say, the CA has waaay too many coolant hoses running under the intake manifold. every time i think the head is ready to come off i find another one. there is no skin on any one of my fingers.

ill report back soon

Yea, it could be something to do with the piston, but sounds more valve related to me as well.

well, i got the head off without too much trouble. funny thing is, nothing seems to be wrong with it. the head is out of true by about 2 thou, but that doesnt seem like it would have caused such a huge oil leak.

One thing i did notice though was that none of my head studs sit the same height. even with them all the way down some are as much as a quarter inch higher or lower than others. did anyone else have this problem? i measured the stud length and the depth of the holes through the head and it seems some of the nuts wouldnt even make it to the head surface. it would definitely explain the low compression in cyl. 3.

well, ive got to go next day some oil lines for the turbo and stuff. where did you guys all order your taka lines from?

Before you took the head off, you should have put a tsp of oil in the spark plug hole of the low cylinder. If the numbers went up at all, you could have found your issue right then and there.

the engine was completely rebuilt less than 8k miles ago. its got new chromoly rings and clevite bearings and arp fasteners. its definitely not something bottom end related.

so you're head wasn't fitted properly then. I think you'll need to remove the studs and re-cut the threads in the block

i believe he was saying you should have checked it regaurdless and eliminated the possibility.

did you compression check it before the rebuilt? if so was #3 lower than the rest?

Just because it was rebuilt 8k ago doesnt mean that you didnt make a mistake!
