Hi all. I just purchased an 07 M35. This is my first post and I appreciate this forum being available. I am wondering about some things regarding my new M:
1. Carbon cleaning is recommended by the service advisor at infiniti. Any thoughts?
2. I can't make out the service records. I think the car has been serviced. It has 132k. I can email the records if anyone wants to peruse them. What do I need to take care of asap for prevention purposes? There are no symptoms.
3. What tires should I buy? I like kumho and hankook but am flexible. Looking for value-I don't need the name brand pricey stuff but I sure didn't enjoy hydroplaning the other night either.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Maintenance:
The first things to check are all the fluids - oil, brake, power steering, coolant, transmission, and differential. If you cannot confirm they have been changed recently, change them one by one until complete. Many failures could have been prevented if the fluids were changed as needed. Also check the hoses for dry rot or brittle state.
Next I would pay for a dealer to do an oil / filter change. They will inspect brakes, tires, suspension, and many other things to give you a starting point. My dealer allows me to bring my own filter and oil - they just charge me for the labor and the special washer on the oil pan drain. The dealer can provide missing info about maintenance if done at any Infiniti dealer nationwide.
Spark plugs should have been changed about 30,000 miles ago so if possible, have them checked as well.
My 07 had about 100,000 miles and ran like new so even with your higher mileage, you have plenty of enjoyable miles to go.
Things like oxygen sensors, MAF, and camshaft sensors will fail as with any older car, but maintenance will probably prevent any major failures.

As for tires, I was a die-hard Michelin fan but decided to try Hankook. I had Hankooks on my 07 and also had a set put on my 09. I have Hankook S1noble2 size 255/40/19 and they are amazing. After about 30,000 miles, they are not as silent as they were at new, but trust me when I tell you that severe hard braking in deep puddles of Florida's rainy roads have never ever caused me to slide or feel any loss of control. At highway speeds in light snow or heavy rain, there is no hydroplaning. Even at speeds in excess of 100 mph, the car handles and responds like 40 mph. The last inspection (June 2016) at the dealer rated them as less than half tread gone after 30k miles. No sidewall issues, no cupping, etc. That's great life from a tire on these cars. I expect I should get 50k miles which is much more than Michelin's. I buy my tires at Tire Rack online and they ship the tires to my local shop for installation - takes 3-4 days.
Also, make sure you get the new tires balanced and get a 4-wheel alignment - nothing ruins a tire or a smooth ride like a misaligned car.

There is a thread called FAQ in the forum. Check that for any info on modifications, maintenance, etc. This forum is priceless for that thread alone.

Good luck!

Thanks for the detailed reply. I believe my car was well taken care of. The Infiniti service advisor was a close friend of the owners and when the man passed away he sold the car for them. He even drove it 2 hours to meet me for them. I don't think the service records reflect all that has been done if you get my drift because the car is immaculate. I don't understand the maintenance schedules. It seems like at least on schedule 1 and 2 you would change the fluids at some point at least-dont mean oil. It makes me wonder if the fluids were ever changed. I think if it needed it they would have been changed because again I think the man took care of this M. The service advisor is just kind of semi-helpful to me on these issues because I think he thinks I won't be bringing him the car for service. I had no idea they are all on commission only-the service advisors. I bet I have the most basic M on this forum by the way. It is white with wheat. No tint. Looks like a rental car almost lol.

If in doubt, replace all fluids and other cheap wear items (belts, PCV valves, spark plugs). Your car will thank you.

Don't pay for a carbon cleaning..... if there's carbon in the cylinders, the best method is high revs often. Seriously.

For carbon I prefer some occasional Techron and an Italian Tuneup.

As the owner of an Italian car, I can attest to the effectiveness and fun of the process.

If the M was serviced by an Infiniti dealer they will have all service records regardless where it travelled. Tires should be based on where you live. I assumed this is an M35 and not an M35X. The car moves fast enough but is not drag racer. I base tires on overall performance, comfort, noise, and traction. I believe Conti's DWS ExtremContact are one of the best all around choices. As stated previously plugs are overdue if not done already.

While Kumho and Hankook can be excellent, and underrated budget tires, take a look at the Dunlop Signature HP, for excellent dry, wet and snow performance, if you want to remain within the similar price point.
