i just hit 6,000 miles on my versa.

what service(s) is required at this mileage?

what were your experiences with getting your car serviced?

also, i bought this from a dealer about 2 hours from where i am now. there is a nissan dealer around the corner from me, would i be able to get it serviced there under some nissan plan, such as some regularly scheduled free service or maintenance. i have heard of people receiving a post card saying their car needs to be serviced, wondering if this service can be done at any dealer under warranty, just a check up i would say, basically asking if it is free?

You should have gotten a booklet with your car that describes the maintenance intervals and recommended things to be checked/serviced.

It's online on the nissanversa.org downloads area too, I believe.

And yeah you can get it done anywhere.

Please tell me you've already had your oil changed before now...

Well, I'm not sure about the service intervals for the Versa, but I doubt there's much to do at 6,000 miles. You can go to

http://www.nissanusa.com/ownin....html

for more information regarding the service intervals (which are based on 3,750 mile intervals).

But again, I'll ask, have you had your oil changed yet? Because that's important. Some synthetic oils may provide 6,000 mile protection, but since you were also breaking in your engine during this time, it would have been important to change your oil perhaps 3,000 miles ago.

At 7,500 miles, however, Nissan will just rotate your tires, change your oil (for the second time), and "inspect" everything else, since nothing major will need replacing (except for brakes) for quite a long time.

At this point, however, you'd be better off just changing your own oil and checking your other fluids and "inspecting" your air filter.

I don't won't to get into the old arguement of oil change intervals but the Nissan book recommends anything from 3750 to 7500 miles depending on your driving conditions(these are in the service interval booklet) and it doesn't say anything specific about the first oil change.

Some dealers throw in a free service period but I doubt the one close to you will honor the selling dealer's as you didn't buy it right around the corner but went two hours away to purchase your vehicle.

I hear you. There's a lot of myths and superstition surrounding engine oil in general. The 3,000 mile oil change has been challenged, and with today's engines, rightfully so.

Break in procedures also differ from person to person, with some folks prefering to baby their car for the first x,xxx miles, while others promote thrashing the engine from the get-go to really "break" it in...again, with today's engines, the ideas of yesteryear sort of go out the window.

As far as a break-in oil change, my theory is that if you got the car new, the engine is going to go through a period of adjustment as everything settles in (gas mileage changes would support this theory) and as such, a prompt oil change might be helpful to a young engine. Beyond that, I'm more of a 4 to 5k changer myself, using synthetic oil.
