From everything I've read on here, redline is one of the best gear oils and to get 75w90. Since I can't buy it where I live I ordered it online. I'm looking at it now and it is 75W90. But, it's the gl5 not the gl4. In the How to section, it says that gl5 is bad.

I've got a 1998 240sx stock everything.

Should I send it back for the gl4?

Come to your own conclusion...

from Redline site:

GEAR AND SYNCHRONIZER WEAR PROTECTIONMost manufacturers of manual transmissions and transaxles recommend an 80W or 90W GL-4 lubricant. GL-5 gears oils which are required in hypoid differentials are not used in most synchromesh transmissions because the chemicals used to provide the extreme pressure protection can be corrosive to synchronizers, which are commonly made of brass or bronze. Typically, the use of a GL-5 lubricant in a synchromesh transmission will shorten the synchronizer life by one half. The extreme pressure requirements of spur gears and helical gears found in transmissions are not nearly as great as found in rear-wheel drive differentials. A GL-4 lubricant provides adequate protection for most manual transmissions, unless a unique design consideration requires the extra protection of a GL-5.

Yeah yeah. Obviously I need the help.

All I know is to get the 75w90. That's what I got. I get it here and it's gl-5. I'm guessing MT-90 is the stuff I need?

I can come to my own conclusion, but I don't want to f*** up my car.

i can't remember what my redline bottles say and what GL it is, but from reading around this is the setup to go with:

MT-90 for transmission75W90 for the rear diff. so if you got the 75w90 for your rear diff you should be fine. if you got the 75w90 for the transmission, it's bad, it's not designed for the transmission.

i don't think i answered your question though

Yeah you did. MT-90 for my transmission.

Jeg's website doesn't say anything about it being gl-5 on the product description.

Wow. So now I'm ending up spending 45 bucks on three bottles of transmission fluid. A great way to start my upgrade on my car.

I reorded the Mt-90. Also I just odered the ngk iridiums and ngk plug wires. Pretty excited. I'm also going to replace my fuel filter, distribotor cap, and rotor. I guess my O2 sensor too.

What else?

2.4L for the transmission and 1L for the diff. So you'll need 4 bottles.

If your cv boots are busted, change em.If your tie rods have play in them, change em although it's usually the tension rods that give out first on these 40's. Check your timing with a timing light.Check the function of your pcvRun some fuel system cleaner. The stuff I like alot is from Greased lightning, it's better than redline and felt better than just your plain jane seafoam, although you should run that through your brake booster line to the engine before you do all the tune up stuff you've got above. Check over your tire pressureCheck your struts to see if they're blown or not, etc.One of the biggies that gives out are the ball joints in the lower control arms too so that's another thing to check over.
