So, after a lot of bad luck with my past three Maxima's, I finally got my hands on my new car: a 1989 s13 coupe. (5sp of course...) So the car is in good shape, a few dings and dents and in desperate need for a paint job. However there is no rust which was what was worrying me the most. The engine is really strong and the acceleration surprised me (i was able to keep up with my mom's '99 Maxima SE driven by my brother). When I shift to 2nd (upshift only) it makes the most awful noise so I think the clutch is starting to go.Also the driver seat has a rip and just falls back all the way. I guess I'll wait a little and get two cheap racing seats to replace them. For the price I paid for the car, $620, I'd say it was a steal considering that even in these conditions I can sell it to a ricer for at least $3000:D . So I guess now that i am done with the presentations I can officialy join the NICO family. The forum looks cooler than the Maxima.org one. Now for a few requests:-Right Fender (possibly gray-black color combo)-Driver Seat (good shape)-Unused unneeded Clutch (Exedia pref.)-Unused Flywheel

Thank you!

Shift to 2nd gear noise is most likely a worn 2 gear syncro in your transmission, not your clutch. But for $620, the car is worth every penny :thumbup

Sad about the Maximas:(:(:( Mine gets hardly any maintenance done, looks like ****, and it still runs strong at nearly 300,000 miles. What happened to your's?

Oh and how were you able to keep up with the 99 Max iwith an 89 S13?

My first Maxima was a '94 GXE and the transmission died while I was on the middle of the highway. I was doing about 65mph and it downshifted to second and stayed there. The car over-revved like crazy so I pulled to the shoulder as quick as I could. Turns out the the torque converter was dead for a while and the transmission soon followed. Then I got a '94 SE and after six days I was driving on the Palisades Parkway and the engine just blew up (car caught on fire and everything). My old '95 GXE (car had over 275,000 mi) was running perfectly until I parked by the park and a tree fell on it. YAY! for my good luck!

Well, I don't mean drag racing, it was in the streets of my house which are all up in the mountains and my bro just couldn't shake me off. If it wasn't my first day with the car I would have passed him. Question: The HICAS only came with the top of the line models, correct. I have a base coupe but I just couldn't get it loose. I mean I was pushing it and trying to lock the rears, but the car handled like it was on rails. Not that I don't like it, just kind of creepy....

I guess it's time to take the transmission apart and check the syncros... Thanks J-Spec

Question: Does anyone know how much it will be to replace the gear syncro? Is it something that I can easily do at home with jack stands? College just started again and between car, registration and insurance I am broke so if I can save money I will :-D

wow, that's some pretty crappy luck for maximas...

you can drive the car with bad synchros, it'll just require revmatching...

probably best to have a shop replace them...

it makes a crunching sound and is hard to go into gear right?

Yes, the car makes a grinding noise both when upshifting and downshifting to 2nd. I want to get it fixed soon because I'm afraid it'll eventually fry the clutch if I keep grinding it like that. I've double shifting from 1st to 3rd mostly but living and driving in the mountain roads all the time it can really become a nuisance.Anyone has an idea of how much I'm expecting to have to shell out?

You don't have to skip second gear, just rev match it and you'll be fine, it's something you should learn how to do well anyway. You wont fry your clutch either, that has nothing to do with the syncros. If you're grinding gears though, you are doing damage to your transmission. Again, just rev match and you'll be good to go. I don't know how much it costs to replace the syncro.

It's probably cheaper to get a used (but low-ish mileage) manual transmission and have that installed. You can find 'em in junkyards, you can find 'em here on our Buy/Sell/Trade forums.

My 2nd gear synchro gets cranky when the weather is very cold. You could *try* putting in some fancy gear oil (Redline, etc.) or maybe something like that Pennzoil Synchromesh. Some folks have had some good things to say about it and maybe it would help a bit. It probably won't solve your problem, but maybe it'll make things a bit more tolerable.

It certainly sounds like it couldn't get much worse, at least. If you decide to give the fluid replacement thing a try, just make sure the stuff you get says it's OK to use with yellow metals. Our synchros are brass and don't like overly corrosive stuff.
