Here is my new (well, not so new, but new to me) 1970 Datsun 521.  She looks like hell, but she runs like a "raped ape"!  I am looking forward to restoring her back to the original way she was.  Maybe a few improvements though;).  I will keep you updated as to how it goes.  Blessings to all!

She looks pretty good to me considering that this is what mine looked like when I bought it:

Yep...seriously, that's in nice shape compared to what most of us start with.

That rig was a late '69....'70's had the side marker lights.  It will make a small difference when you start looking at wiring diagrams and such.

Does it have the two reflectors at the bottom, back corners of the bed?  If so....you are really, really lucky to have it so complete!!!  Those back reflectors are extremely hard to find.  You also have the side reflectors still in tack and the bumperettes.

You could pretty much rub out the paint and run it!!

Congrats on finding such a nice one!!!

sorry...I'm not disputing the "70" part.....it was titled as a '70 and that's the info you need for registration and such.....but physically...it's a '69 model and that will make a difference on some things.

Wow, I did not really know a whole lot about this truck.  Thanks for all the info.  I am actually driving it every day.  It seems to be pretty good on gas.  Big difference from the '01 Dodge 3500 dually diesel I was driving.

Make sure you visit http://www.olddatsuns.com and download any of the applicable manuals.  The engine manuals are separate, so don't forget those.  Just burn them to a CD and you'll have any reference you need.  Having at least one print manual makes quick reference a lot easier.

My wife's 521 pulls about 33mpg ......that was with another bed on the back, upside down(redneck canopy   and it filled with doors and such.  She's got a dogleg, 3.89 diff, and a weber carb.  It's still pretty quick off the line   Anyway........

It the truck a L521 or a PL521?  In other words, is the engine a J13 or an L16?

If it runs like a raped ape.....I'll put my money on the L series!  Can't imagine a J13 being described like that!!  LOL

If it has a stamped steel valve cover....it's a J series.
If it has an aluminum valve cover...it's an L series....next question would be which one :)

My J16 with a side draft Weber, header, Pertionix ignition, etc. runs like a raped ape!  (Well, maybe an ape that just had consentual sex)

It has the aluminum valve cover.  It is a PL521.  And there is an H at the end of the model number.  I don't know what that means either.:?

Yochanan, Great looking truck; some wax, Armorall, and some elbow grease, and it will look as good as most Datsun trucks on the road. Good luck with your restoration. John

How much did your truck cost when you purchased it? I am trying to find out where the market is on these classics. Thanks Josh
