makes you wonder how he blew the head gasket in the first place though. for something that looked relatively stock. definitely check the bottom end while your at it.

is this going into that S14 btw?

If he didn't upgrade the fuel management, I would definitely make sure he didn't burn any pistons up.

nice work man.

if a guy overboosted and blew the head gasket on a stock fuel system then you may have some work ahead of you. He would have been over 15 PSi and the stock head gaskets have been known to hold up around 18-20 plus with well tuned motors. There are some serious red flags. I would actually recommend not buying anything else and waiting until I saw the inside of that block before I spent to much on other things... but if it is good that is a really good buy

Sweet deal on the short block! I would replace the bearings and piston rings while you have it apart.

P.S. You gotta post a pic of the graphics on the side of your car!

You have to pull the head at the very least. If the pistons have been damaged, there will be telltale scrapes on the cylinder walls. I've also seen where blown head gaskets leaked coolant into the bores and pitted the cylinder walls.

Damaged pistons can sometimes be hard to tell from a top down visual. Most times, overboosted motors will have pistons that look like they were burned on one side, and in the blackened areas, you'll see where the metal was starting to bubble and melt.

Some damaged pistons, however, have cracked ring lands and are impossible to tell with them still in the block. If the ring lands start to chunk up, they can scrape the cylinder wall, giving you a hint that something is wrong, but I had 3 pistons in my rebuild motor have cracked/destroyed ring lands, but they didn't scrape the walls up. One actually heated the ring land up so much, it vaporized and only left a blue mark on the cylinder wall.

All of that happened from the previous owner cranking the boost up too high without upgrading the fuel management.

You can see where the ring land melted out and went out the exhaust.

The rest of the ringlands starting to fall apart when I deringed the piston.

here's some pitting on top of a piston where it was starting to melt

The bores had pitting on them from having coolant pool in the cylinder (block must have been laid sideways at some point), but the pistons miracuously enough didn't damage the cylinder walls. I still had to bore it out to fix the damage, but it runs better than it probably ran for anyone now.

three things.

Get the FSM or a SR20 rebuild DVDand read the steps you will need to take 4 or 5 times. if you feel like you can't do it then don't waste your time.

Once you feel confident. Deside what kind of setup you want and start talking to some guys on here about what they are running as far as piston, rod combo.

Be patient and expect the first time to take a while (assuming you have a life outside of cars) you will need to make sure that you spec everything out right, you will have to get someone to check your block before you start the work.

Since the stock bore is 86mm, 86.5mm won't fit without boring the block out. It's simple math

Did you just win that oil pump off of ebay? LOL if so I was the guy you beat. Looks good so far. Keep us updated. Can't wait for my block to get here so I can start working on it.

Now that you've got your engine apart take your time to check all bearings, shaft play, pretty much everything, check your cylenders, pistons and rings and change as many gaskets as you can, it might be a pain in the *** but in the long run it might save your *** lol

All the ring-land problems I have seen with the stock SR pistons makes me want to get some CP pistons.
