I really need to get used to rear wheel drive.

I took a sharp 90 degree turn at the same speed I do in my MKII Golf GTI, and the *** end swung out on me. If I hadn't stayed calm and known what to do, I definitely would have crashed into another car.

Now I know why 240s are so good for drifting :D.

I think I had way too much confidence about driving a RWD car. The only other RWD car that I actually got to drive hard was a NA Z32, but it was so predictable and easy to correct that I thought that was what RWD was like. (My first car was a RWD 84 Olds Cutlass Supreme, but I won't count that one).

I think the first thing I'm investing in on this car is suspension, rims and some good tires.

Anyone have any advice on making a smooth transition from FWD to RWD?

from your other post, the braking in reverse noise, is it a sort of graunching scraping noise? i got that from mine sometimes, but i just replaced the pads and it went away. good luck with the car! i love mine.

Sorry to hear that. Was your's a turbo?

The one I drove was still very tight. The engine might have been driven hard, but it never saw corners at speed. It was some 16 year old rich kids car that my buddy did a timing belt on and let me drive.

I could feel whenever it was going to oversteer, and when it did, It was real easy to correct. It was NA, and just felt very heavy to me.

yes.. I did the same yesterday but worse. I went to visit my sister and she wanted a ride. So I took her out for a spin. We were leaving town and I took an easy left turn (not sharp), downshifted to 2nd and gunned it. The wheels broke loose and the back end went right, I corrected that and the back end went left and kept on going around until we were going the opposite direction we where suppose to be going. It was raining out earlier in the day so it might have been damp.. That could have been the cause or just pure power.. hahah

I knew it! He took me there before too; said it was his practice spot.

When I was working for the smog referee at Cuesta, I used to go eat my lunch over there all the time. I've seen alot of sherrif's deputies and CHiPs out there. I guess I should just be real careful, and wait until all the summer RV'ers stop coming. It's the tail end of the season anyways.

Thanks for reminding me!

email me when you're going to cruise down here again.

rain + RWD + Excessive speeding = T-boning tree.

(or so the previous owner has done(and I have to deal with)

My greatest advice is to go to a parking lot after a lil snow has dropped, and fool around, get used to what you eed to do to grab with RWD. after that, you should be good.

find a BIG open parkin lot and learn how your car responds, try and lose control in the rain and the find out what werks best to correct it back and get it under control. its all about knowin your car limits

I had the opposite problem my senior year of high school. My first car was an 82 Datsun 200SX (RWD), after a couple winters in that with bad tires I became an expert at maintaining control while the *ss end wagged like an excited spaniel. Then I got a 1988 Honda Accord hatchback (FWD), and the first time I hit black ice with it I reacted naturally the way I did in the Datsun and ended up spinning off the road tail-end first. Luckily I hit nothing, only had to wait for a 4x4 to come along and pull me out of the snow.Give me RWD any day on slippery roads. At least it's predictable, and the wheels most likely to lose traction are NOT the same wheels doing the steering.

I've gotten much more comfortable with my car now.

The only problem now is when I've executed a perfectly controlled slide and have it pointed back straight again, my worn out suspension and tall sidewalls (stock rims) unload, sending me into a slide again.

That'll all be taken care of soon. I just need to save up some more money.

AND

rain+rwd+bald tires=light pole

I was driving my first 510, with a built L20B and these super bald, 13 inch, 255/35 tires. The tires were so frickin rare that I literally couldn't find any replacements for them. The freeway onramp was circular. I was straightening the wheel after going around the circle. Even though I totally eased into the throttle because I knew the ground was wet and that I had a lot of torque.. the back end still slid and I ended up hitting a light pole.

Moral of the story... start looking for replacement tires before they're totally bald.
