if you just want to learn other peoples stuff...by all means learn tab.
but if you ever want to get serious, you'll need to learn how to learn the songs by ear and/ore read notation.
i would recommend getting a chord book, do some scales, maybe learn one or two songs via tab, and then just try to figure the song out on your own. learning 5 songs by ear puts you way ahead of the guy who learned 20 songs via tab.

have fun with the new guitar man, but TRY to learn stuff by ear. a well developed ear is BY FAR the most important thing to have as a musician.
