Hi all,

Ok, so I was looking for a 4x4 for my cousin at my dads friends tow yard and I came across this 300zx. I REALLY didn't need another car, but I have to store my M45 for the winter and used that as an excuse to buy the 300zx (besides my dad's friends sold it to me for $900). It has a really strong engine, with no sludge that I can see in the heads and an auto transmission. It's got 154k though, but runs really smooth. It looks like some one was just running her into the ground (or at least the interior). It had all Nissan wires, cap and such, so I'm guessing the thing never even seen a tune up before (you should have seen the spark plugs, horrible!!!). So to get to the point what should I look out for? I have a 90 Q45 so I know that the trannys are a weak spot for Nissan/Infiniti. So far I've given it a tune up (wires, plugs, cap, rotor, air & fuel filters, pcv valve, front brakes, B12 in the oil and fuel (to clean out the crap), belts, and hoses. The plenum seems to be pretty hard, but no cracks in it that I can see of. One problem I notice is when I accelerate and floor the petal I get a 3 sec lag in the kick down. Could be this be a throttle position sensor or a transmission kick down sensor (or something of the such)? I'm going to have the transmission flushed with Mobil 1 and I need to flush the radiator. Any help with common problem areas would be most welcome. Does this thing have a timing belt or chain (I'm pretty sure it has a belt but want to verify) and how hard and often sould I change it? Hopefully if its a chain it doesn't have plastic chain guides like my 90 Q45!

Thanks,

Danniel

yes it has a timing belt and if you don't know when it was changed last, replace it! (60k recomended) as weill as the tensioner and stud! not a bad idea to hit the cam and crank seals as well and there are a few hoses that are a simple swap while you have it apart (these parts can add up pretty quick but still much cheaper than an Z32)

the auto transmission's I have heard tend to be on the weak side, you might want to consider and 5 speed swap if you intend to abuse this car much, welcome to Z ownsership we are much cooler than the rest of the Nissan/Datsun/Infiniti ownners and we smell better
