Just got a 1990 240sx....Now what???

I just bought, a 90 240sx, it has 140k on it, the brakes are bad, and there is some knocking that last for a few min, after turning on the car. I bought this car to get my hands dirty, i really want to turn this car into something im proud of, so i have a question for all the experts, if this was your project car, what would be the steps that you would take to get a desent sx, that can hold its own on the road.....Keep in mind im not a pro at this and im not RICH..LOL...Everyone has to start somewhere....Thanks

get new rotors and pads...

Replace the lower rod bearings.

is the knocking recurring at higher rpms, or does it stop once the car is warmed up.

the knocking is ongoing, he said it was a lifter noise or something???
