I have had my 1990 240 SX fastback since Thursday with just a tad under a quarter tank of fuel. Today I just filled up and heard a hissing sound as I loosened the gas cap. Why is there hissing in the middle of winter? In the summer I can understand but when it is near freezing out? Will someone explain this one to me? Is there a bad pump or fuel filter? Also, my indicator light for low fuel does not light up, is there a fix for this that I can do myself?

Thanks in advance.

whoa, whoa, whoa.

The hissing is normal, regardless of season, thats just pressure being released. And your low fuel indicator isnt gonna come on with just under a fourth of a tank.

like was said above the hissing is completly normal, and its more or less a nissan thing my first 240 did it, my 300 does it and my current 240 does as well. the gas light comes on when the needle is almost below empty. you should have about 3-4 gallons left in the tank then.

Yeah my '40 and my truck both do it. It's just relieving pressure in the tank.

In my Galant my fuel light comes on at just below a quarter tank, telling me that there is about four or so gallons left.

And thats normal? Ive never heard of that. Do all galants do that?

I stand corrected, as far as all cars are concerned. But I know it wont come on in a 240.

Most newer cars have sealed gas tanks, so as fuel leaves the gas tank, there is less pressure in it.

The light comes on approximently when there is about 2 gallons of gas left. Believe me I have tested it. I have been able to get around 360-365 miles to the tank before it came out.

my low fuel light comes on at around 400 miles (S14's have a slightly larger tank). I always get the hissing cause I always run down to the bottom of the barell.
