I just purchased a 2001 maxima and found that it as really big gas hog(aound 300 miles on a full 18 gallon tank). Is this common for all these models or is there something I can do?

More info plz....Are you using ALL 18 gallons? How much gas does the thing take when you fuel up? How much city vs. highway driving do you do? How fast do you drive? Has the car had all its services?

My cars been taken care of and i dont drive too fast but i will open her up on the on ramp. I do a pretty good amount of highway driving and get about 20 mpg. Remember these cars do weigh about 3600 lbs and have about 230hp.

300 miles and you complain? I am getting about 200 on a full tank of gas not even complaining, or maybe I should? (City driving) But yeah, that's when driving in a cold weather having heater on most of the time, and having to warm warm up the car in the morning and in the evening after the work for about 5 minutes each.

What are the best recommendations of getting a better mileage?

ouch 200 miles! Sounds like you may need a little service. Make sure your air filter is clean, check tire psi, if you have no SES light then yuor sensors should be ok. Have you done all of your serviceS?

I just didnt know if i was getting really bad miliage or not I still have to do the tune up and oil change, just a little short on money right now. thanks for the help.

No I haven't done them. Waiting for loans to come in so I can get all the work done on it.

Follow the suggestion from "MTZI30" and then clean the MAF sensor (Cleaner available from Autozone for @ $6. Do not touch the sensing element when cleaning). Then add RedLine SI-1 (@ $8) or BG44K (@ $18) Fuel System Cleaner to a full tank of gas.

It's possible that an O2 sensor(s) is failing so it's important to have a free scan from Autozone and the likes.

You'd be suprised at how much more gas driving around fast like that uses. Just for on tank, go nice and easy on her.

Thanks, I will check the air filter, the tire PSi should be good I think, and I have SES light which is not a sensor failure. I haven't done any of the services, since I just recently got the car. So far I have replaced the spark plugs.

And I like driving her FAST.
