So I just recently finished up the intake manifold, here are some pictures:

stock turbo + downpipe fun!

I removed: the ficd, idle valve, warm up valve, 19 coolant hoses, butterfly flaps (completely removed).

Overall there is a vast improvement, the low end feels about the same if not better, but the top end is incredible compared to stock, it keeps pulling to 7500. I am going to have the car dynoed in a couple weeks if I have the money for it.

The manifold was handmade by me, including the flange, total cost was around $180, $150 of that was getting it TIG welded by someone else because I only have a MIG.

Injector harness will be wrapped up soon, just waiting to get some dry vinyl tape, which isn't sticky as compared to wrapping it all up in standard electrical tape.

The best thing, and the main reason I did this, is that it no longer takes a LONG time and a pain in the *** to remove the intake manifold or get to things around it.

All kinds of comments are welcome.

Specs:Buddy Club tuned ECU (dont know what it is tuned for..), Walbro 255 fuel pump, stock FPR, stock injectors, stock MAF, stock turbo running stock boost, stock exhaust and downpipe, saab intercooler (installed by previous owner, tubing done by me).

Future plans are: Turbo manifold, s15 t28, full 3 inch exhaust, real intercooler with some nice stainless tubing.

Wow i'm impressed that actually looks a lot better than Boost boys, probably more functional too.

Basically, I have:

Coolant out the thermostat housing, into the rad.

Below, I have coolant out the radiator, into the T section, the small hose goes back, the turbo coolant feed T's off of that, and then the hose goes into the heatercore, and then the lower hose for the heatercore comes out of the block like stock.

Sort of like this when looking straight down at it:..............|turbo ...............\...................block................|..................| |heat======|==========| |....................................| |.....................................\ \........................................lower rad outlet

The IC piping is just done quickly because it is for that SAAB intercooler, I actually did the hot side pipe the day after I first got the car.

I'd like to see how the plenum volumes compare, but I do like the tapered manifold better. It's really hard to accurately build a plenum without a flow bench. If you don't, there isn't really any way to tell which runner is flowing more or less than the others.

True, I have heard either both for and against the tapered manifold. I think that the tapered would tend to have better throttle response because the air will get to the back of the plenum faster when the throttle is opened however the farther cylinders may suffer from less air available when it is at constant WOT.

For me, its fine, like I said, this cost me $180 total and it was really done because I got pissed off at how difficult it was to remove the stock intake manifold after the coolant hose above the alt got a hole in it.

Regardless, it looks great!

PS:Your sig pic is a smidge too big. I think the sig limits are 600x235 including pics, text, smileys, etc.

Speaking of oversized sigs, jeebus!

Ca18det240sxchk, you need to put your sig on a crash diet NOW.

If we have to change it you loose your avitar...

There is a lot that goes into the design of the intake manifold. Flow bench does not give you a clear yes or no answer and should be used as single string of data.

If you are talking about that chrome huge plenum manifold that was posted? No offence to the owner, but that is bad design. It is under the design of "bigger is better".

To the OP, Very nice inake for a first build. That taper is a bit more than I would. Also, a curved plenum will "flow" better than a square, but in your build, budget was a factor. Props

Good morning.

You're in Huntington? Cool, about 10 miles away from me. I will think about making another and get back to you all, it was all done by hand, go ahead and email me if you are interested, I can pretty much build it any way you want. I did not put velocity stacks in mine because it was done on a budget, but those would make a nice difference and add about $120 to the price tag.

If anyone has any sources as to where I could have some intake flanges produced out of 3/8" aluminum please let me know, that would make it much easier to assemble more manifolds.
