I just did a smog test today and failed. the Tech said the carbon level jumps up and down, at times it would be at passing levels and others it would jump up to failing levels. What would cause this? If it helps the carbon level went up to 6 points (I don't know the scale).

Also I told the tech that the engine hasn't been used for a while. The story is, I got the car from a friend, I found the engine at a towing yard, it is off a 240 automatic trans car. Right now I don't have the A/C belt on, because the previous owner took out the condenser and dryer. I will eventually get those things but right now I trying to pass smog. The car has NEW O2 sensor and new CAT.

Last thing the tech told me if the engine has been sitting for a while. I should put fuel injector cleaner in it and drive it for a while then it might pass.

Any suggestions?

Carbon level? HC? CO? CO2? Fuel injector cleaners are not really effective IMO, except for BG44K. A rail flush is even better. Was the car warmed up really good when you tested it?

Well yeah, the tech tried warming it up for a while too. He reved the car to 3k rpm and held it there for a while. but it just did the same.

Sorry I don't know the full details of the HC and the CO2 levels only the CO level was 6 points I think. I know the guy so he tryed checking it before doing the actual test.

I think what Daedalus is getting at though is that each of the three emissions gasses he mentioned have carbon atoms in it. Need to know which gas was over the limit. I'm thinking you may be trying to say the Carbon Monoxide(CO) was 6 points over? Not sure. please be more clear. Knowing which gas is too high can narrow down the possible causes a lot more.

point system is not used to measure any of the gases in a california smog test. HC's and NOx is measured in ppm[parts per million] and CO is measured by percentage. Giving only one gases measurement will not help diagnose the problem since it would only show a part of the picture. I will need accurate numbers for all 5 gases to get some idea of where the problem might be. And I am a licensed smog repair tech in california I dont know how anyone else could come to an accurate conclusion as to your problem without seeing all your numbers. Tell your buddy to run a complete pre-test on your vehicle and give you a print out of the test results so you can post them here.
