Alright so a couple weeks ago i bought a 1990 240sx and I was planning on building a KA24DE for a turbo. But instead i did some searching and found the vh45de swap. I know that any 1990-1996 q45 motor will work, i was just curious if a certain years motor was preferred. When i get the motor i plan on pulling it all apart and replacing the bearings, rings and may even balance the rods and pistons. :werd:

I would go with a 1990-1992 Infiniti Q45 engine (VH45DE) for power or 1994-1995 engine if you want to save some time and money because of the metal backed chain guides, Verses the 1990-1993 plastic chain guides.

Dennis (Q45Tech) says they haven't seen enough 1993 Infiniti Q45's to determine if the chain guides were switched over that year. And there is a really rare chance that a early 1994 Infiniti Q45 (VH45DE) may have plastic chain guides.

1996 Infiniti Q45 (VH45DE) engines are OBD 2 and have no Variable Valve Timing (VVT) so they are said to be a little slower but the most reliable and easiest to fix because of OBD 2. And no re-tuned ECU fits this engine if a OEM ECU is used because again its OBD 2.

Well ive searched around my area and there are a couple 90-93 motors for around 400-600, so that will probably be around the year ill go with. Can you swap the metal backed chain guides with the plastic ones, or is it even worth it. Still reading around these forums to try and get my knowledge on the motor before i buy. But i appreciate the help man.

Yes 1990-1993 VH45DE's can have metal backed chain guides installed its just a matter of finding the parts and time to do it.

Before you buy the engine get as much info on as you can, VIN from vehicle is was pulled from, Look inside the oil fill hole for varnish or sludge, Remove the valve covers and oil pan if you can while at the yard. Make sure the oil pan is not dented in ANY WAY.

And be prepared to invest a couple of thousand dollars AT LEAST.

Yea i already have a list of parts figured, anywhere from 2800-4000, depending on how much i get parts for. Thats including the mazworx kit. I plan on taking a lot of time with the motor, porting the heads and intake manifold/ sub manifolds. I want to try and get the motor within the next 6 months, which is a pretty good possibility, so that i can pull it all apart while im at school (attending wyotech this fall). My goal for my 240 project was 250-300 hp and since i can get that with a stock motor, this is the way i want to go.
