I was wondering if just replacing the piston rod and bearing on my 300zx when i first experienced the rod knock would have solved the problem or not?

when you rebuild the engine, you replace andy worn or damaged rods and bearings, so the easy answer is it still will fix the problem, the problem si you have to tear the egnine down to do this, so while your at it it's cheap insurance to hit the main bearings and throw in some frech rings and hone the cylinder walls, if the walls are damaged adn require and overbore then you get to go to the machine shop and you'll need oversized pistons and rings
