It came out nicely and the filter didn't look worse for wear. Filter mag was rusted but inside used filter look new. Oil dripped out nicely as if it was a 3000 mile change. Visually nothing out of ordinary. I am not into oil analysis but all seems well in the world. I do 50% city and 50% highway. When city it alot of stop and go and when highway its wayyyyyyyyyy long 5-6 hours of driving.

I use Signature Series Amsoil 5w-30 and Bosch D+ 3323 oil filter as usual. Cost of materials. Old leftover half jug cost around $40 last year. New Jug $43 the other day bought from my local hardware store. And New filter around $12 at walmart.
Plus my trusty magnetic oil drain plug.

The engine is soo quiet, it's hard to tell if its on while in the cabin. In my opinion.

Doing my best to save environment and don't have much time to stay under the car with a 3 year old running around and a newborn these days. Taking advantage of my extended drains. :chuckle:

I easily display over 30mpg on my trip computer in the highway with fuel efficient driving techniques and in the city the trip computer says around 24.2mpg.

When I was younger, i use to change it at 5000 miles at the least and 7500- 8000 at the most with synthetic. :inout:

17k miles for an oil change? Youre crazy.

Youre not going to be doing the environment any good when youre car is running like s*** in a couple years.

Here is the info from: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/m ... 2fasl.aspx

"SERVICE LIFE
AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline-fueled vehicles as follows:

Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
In all non-gasoline-fueled vehicle applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval."

I've always used Mobil 1 5w-30 and change my oil at 5,000 mi. intervals. I don't know if I could feel comfortable going 15,000 with 50/50 driving, but I know AMSOIL makes excellent products.

Likewise, except I will sometimes go out to 7500 or so. That puts me at about 1 oil change every 8 or 9 months.

just a piece of advice.. oil manufacturer aren't the one who designed your car, "ALWAYS" follow car manufacture maintenance schedule. yes you wont notice it, but in a long run you'll be spending more money :)

AMSOIL makes a great product. i was sponsored by them for 2 years, and its a solid product. i refuse to use anything else in my racebikes. that being said, - i would NEVER use an oil for longer than 10,000 miles in my cars. and that would be after a 5,000 OIL ANALYSIS TEST to determine my wear pattern (some cars wear slightly more or less than others).

yes, oils can go for 15,000+ miles... but thats in a perfectly running engine.
the older the engine, the more combustion gasses bypass the rings and into the oil.

yes, filters can go for 15,000 miles... but that too is in a perfectly running engine. and it depends on which filter - as all filters are not the same, and break down after a certain period of time - and unless you take it all apart, you cant tell what condition its in

if your engine has slightly more wear than the AMSOIL test subject, your oil will dirty up quicker, and so will your filter - which will cause your filter to go into BYPASS mode. if your filter gets clogged, it will go into bypass mode, thus no longer filtering the oil; causing you to run dirty oil - further wearing your internal parts.

dont be cheap, nor gullible. buy oil expecting to change it no later than 10,000 miles just to be safe. (conventional oil: 5,000 miles) & (synthetic oil: 5000-10,000 miles)
And make sure you buy a filter specified for higher mileage intervals. many oils can go 15,000+ miles but requires at least 1 or more filters to be changed in that time.

remember just because ABC Co. got great results from using an oil for X amount of miles - doesnt mean you will get the same results / or that its safe to do the same drain intervals. your engine/mileage will yield different results. keep that in mind! ;) AND DONT FORGET TO ADD OIL AS THE MILES RACK UP. OUR ENGINES NATURALLY EAT OIL THROUGH THE PCV SYSTEM, AND IT REQUIRES US TO ADD OIL EVERY NOW AND THEN. IF YOU DRIVE 15,000 AND NEVER ADDED OIL - YOU FOR SURE RAN IT TOO LOW.

Just a piece of advice: a UOA will confirm whether an OCI is too long or not. Blindly following a fixed OCI doesn't mean anything in and of itself. 17K could be fine or it could not for casperfun's engine. Without the UOA there's no telling.

very true. i just simply follow a 5,000-6,000 oil change system with conventional oil i buy for $20(free filter). its a safe number. going 17,000 without an OCI is scary in my book.

i at least hope he's changing is filters more often than that.

The plan was to change the filter mid way and top off with more oil when neccessary. Honestly, I was too lazy to change the filter. More like hoping the bosch distance plus oil filter could handle it since it can take in twice as much dirt. Trying to get my $12 money worth there. :) I will try this time.

Since most feel 5000-7000 oci's are normal. I want to use extended oil changes which I presume is in the 10,000-15,000 mile range.
