I just bought a 1991 240 sx coupe, 5 speed with a black interior/exterior. It has about 104,000 miles. It has a few problems, nothing too critical. From reading other posts, it sounds like I have a bad timing chain tensioner, since i get a noticeable "roller coaster chain" sound from the timing chain area when idling, and which goes away when above 1200 rpms. The car usually ides at about 1000, which I assume is normal, but sometimes it will idle at 500-700, which seems a bit odd. Also, a leaky battery has led to significant rust below the battery, so i need to get some new metal welded in to patch the hole. The local mechanic refuses to open up the engine to fix the tensioner, so it seems my only option is to go to the nissan dealer in town. I assume this kind of repair is going to run close to or over 1000 dollars. Do I have any other options? I don't trust myself to do the repair on my own. Also, the springs have been cut 2 inches. Is this going to lead to any problems besides the struts going out faster than usual? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I can't prove cut springs suck, but I don't trust them.

if the springs were cut 2 inches, it'll increase and have uneven tire wear and it'll be really bouncey/bumpy

oh and welcome to nico :)

Yeah, the ride is quite bad, I just want to make sure that the shock from each pothole I hit isnt going to damage any critical suspension parts; right now my money has to go into engine work, and not struts and springs.

Oh, and i'm eventually going to be in the market for a set of wheels, ideally some 16 inch fat five's. Anyone have a link to some? tirerack didn't have anything that sparked my interest.

anyone have any ideas on what kind of exhaust that is? it doesn't have anything printed on it.

and is it usual to have the power mirror controls, but no power mirrors? this seems kind of strange.

yes, it is alot of money. However, I did find a guy out in the boonies that will do it for 650 parts and labor, I think i'm gonnna go with that.
