Car: 1997 Infinity J30

Post

I just wanted to say hi to everyone on the board and thanks. I was looking for a car recently, and unintentionally came across a 97 Infinity J30 with only 55,000 miles. I really liked the car and its maintance history was perfect. The body looks almost brand new (only two knicks in the paint on the rear bumper and one on the front bumper). I would have guessed it was a 1 year old car based on appearance as I was not at the time familar with an Infiniti. The interior looked brand new. The rims had a few knicks - I may replace them. I coudn't believe it when the dealer said it was a 97!

Most of what I learned about the J30 before I bought it came from this board. Knowing all the common issues that I can expect to come up made me feel better about buying it. Its good to know there are so many people here that have so much experience with them. This board is definately a great resource.

Anyway, I have had it two days now, and the more I drive it the happier I am about it.

Very nice! I think they look great in that color. I am sure you'll have lots of fun with it, especially knowing what a good deal you got, and the fact there is nothing else like it on the road. Good luck with everything.....

Speaking of required maintenance, is there some place I can look up that up? I plan to bring the car into the local Infiniti dealer next week to have looked it over. It would be nice thought to know what stuff needs to be done. I have picked some of it up reading through this board, but haven't found a single location that lists everything that needs to be done and how often. thanks agian!

make sure you change your timing belt every 60k miles otherwise you risk destroying your engine. The engine is an interference design, so when the timing belt breaks, everything goes.

Other than that, do a full transmission flush at about the same 60k mile interval and change the filter. If you want, you can use a synthetic transmission fluid. If you live somewhere where the weather is warm year around and it seldom snows, I would suggest a transmission cooler. Transmission in a warm climate with the weight of the J have shorter lives.

Do oil changes as per owners manual for your region. I prefer running a full synthetic oil with OEM Nissan, Valvoline Max or NAPA gold oil filter.

Use OEM rotors for the brakes, anything else will warp. My preference is OEM rotors with a high quality ceramic brake pads.

Use only OEM Nissan sparkplugs, anything else creates a ton of headaches.

Timing belt on the '95's and after are only required at 105K miles instead of the 60K like the '93 and '94, however, due to the age of the car I would probably have it checked to be sure eveything is ok.

If you wind up replacing it replace the timing belt tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, thermostat, etc. It is much easier to go ahead and do these things as they will have everything broken down and it will be cheaper to have them fix this while they are already in there. Otherwise you face high labor charges if you do it later as they have to break everything back down to get in there.

If you have the timing belt checked and it is ok then just remember to do all of this whenever you replace the timing belt as it will be cheaper to do it all at the same time.

Being an almost 10 year old car I would probably go ahead and have the struts and shocks checked out. Shocks will likely be ok but 10 year old struts I would watch. Have them fluch the transmission and keep an eye on that. I would say that is about all of the major things.

You might check all of the hoses just due to the age of the car. They may be breaking down due to age but that should not be a major expense.

It sounds and looks like the previous owner took very good care of the car so you are REALLY lucky in that aspect. As long as you continue to follow the recommended maintenence to the T you will be fine and will last you a very long time.

Congrats on the purchase. I have an '05 G coupe now but frankly I wish I had my J back. I should have never parted with that car but I had the new car fever so what can you do?
