I started working overnights recently and I now have the need to find something to help pass the time. I hopped on Amazon and bought a lightly used PSP 3000 with the Gran Turismo bundle for $179. I should have asked before I bought, but I wasn't thinking! But is this an ok price?

And what's up with the 3000? Apparently, theres a whole bunch of different versions running around... Was the 3000 a good one to get? Pro's? Con's?

The only way you could get a 2000 at this point would be to buy used, as I think Sony only sells the 3000 and the Go.

As for your 3000, it depends on what you want to do with it. I use mine primarily to play music and movies on my memory sticks, s well as get some MGS and Final Fantasy action in.

If you wanted to break the OS open and run homebrew stuff, you're a bit SOL as I don't think there are any workarounds for the new 3000s, and if you've already updated to the newest firmware, you'd have to go out of your way to roll it back (pandora battery and mem stick combo probably).

I just bought it online today, so its not here yet. But primarily, I'll use it to replace my 80gb Ipod Classic... It'll be my new music/movie/gaming medium on the go. But I don't like paying for stuff that I've already got (UMD's), so whats the process like to transfer movies and music I've already got on my PC to the PSP?

Do I have to convert all these AVI and MKV files to a PSP format? Or can I just use the Wi-Fi to hook up with my PS3's Media Server and have access to all my junk?

I don't really know much about the 'hacking' aspect, so I have no idea what yu're talking about with this firmware stuff...

When the Go came out last fall, Sony released a really useful media utility for the PSP (FINALLY, after 4 effing years).

But if you have a PS3, that'll take care of everything for you, too. Once you authorize both devices to your PSN account you'll be able to swap any media between the two via wifi or USB connection. A lot of movies even have PSP digital copies designed to be imported to the PS3 from the DVD/Bluray and then transferred to the PSP.

The 3000 is a good choice UNLESS you're looking to hack. Otherwise, it's superior. It has more system memory and supports more non-gaming software (like skype) and integrates better with the PS3. Hardware-wise it's pretty much superior to its predecessors all around. It just isn't as hackable. I may pick up a 3000 myself at some point, as my launch-day 1000 is dying (USB and wifi have both stopped working).

What's the hacking about? What am I missing out on? What can a hacked PSP do?

The main benefit of hacking your PSP is being able to run homebrew. There are NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. emulators for the PSP, which is awesome. But custom firmware also enables lots of custom settings, some of them performance oriented, others convenience oriented.

There have been some really good threads on PSP hacks and custom firmware in the past. Here's one of the best: zerothread?id=389296

If you're just after playing UMD games, custom firmware won't make much (if any) difference for you. But if you want your PSP to do more, that's when you want to look into custom firmware options.

Don't forget that you can run PS1 games on a hacked PSP too. I was considering rolling mine back so I could play FF6 on my PSP.

Yes, but the PSone classics selection available on the PSN has gotten pretty decent, so it isn't necessary to hack it to play a lot of PS1 games anymore.

Yeah, the only old game I can seriously consider playing is FF7. Beyond that, I try to just stick with newer games that have high replay value don't don't require too much time investment.

Turismo, a good fighting game, some FF7 related titles and maybe some God of War action. That'll probably be it for me besides web surfing and streaming movies/music. I've become a bit of a light gamer over the years now...
