hi all, just bought a 240sx and its in great shape but has one problem.

after i go faster than 35mph i hear a whinning noise coming from the rear of the car. it only does it when i press the gas, when im coasting it doesnt make any noise.

because the car wasnt driven in 9 months i assumed it was low differential fluid so i just changed out the differential fluid, but its still making the same noise.

any ideas on what it could be? differential bearings? bad differential? something on the rotors?

Thaks for your help

i'd check over the diff and the wheel bearings. Is it always there just a bit quiet, or does it come on after 35mph?

The differential gear lash may be set wrong or the ring/pinion gear faces may be extremely scuffed.

It could be that the previous owner ran the differential on very low level of oil for a long time causing damage.

Ya im hearing the same, its either the wheel bearings or the differntial.

if its the wheel bearings, autozone has them for $32....do i need any special tools to put those on?

if its a differential, do i need to replace the entire diff or can i but some parts to fix it?

its very quite below 35, but after 35 it sounds like a indy car type noise from the rear. a loud whinning sound

I just had the same problem and all i did was to change my diff. gear oil and it worked, try doing this before going into major repairments...

you gotta find out if it's comin from the wheel bearing or the diff. You could always pull the wheel bearing and see if there is pitting and scoring at the bearings. If not, then your diff bearings are shot.

I'd just buy the car some cheese to go with the whine.

Be sure to diagnose the noise properly. I had a similar problem with mine however the noise was located in the trans...

Anyways, bearings are common to go before the diff unless the diff was abused... if it is the diff, most likely its not the diff bearings. its the r&p (ring & pinion) tolerances and or extreme gear/tooth wear.

good luck....
