Hey guys, i'm new here. I've always wanted a 240SX since I first started driving and I finally found one here in the North Country (upstate NY) with minimal rust and with a pretty decent body and interior. The motor doesn't run..I paid for the car but haven't towed it back yet. Its a '89 Hatchback..auto..Don't worry I didn't pay too much for it, but I plan on getting a 5 speed trans and all the 5 speed swap parts for it. From what i've read the motor is the KA24E(right?) the SOHC 2.4..So i'm guessing it might have alittle bit of grunt but not much? I have a few questions-KA-T vs SR20DET swap..whats everyone think...?Is the SOHC KA worth putting money into..?I want to find a LSD rear diff. what would be the best for my money?

I haven't got the car back to my house to check it out yet but I knew that the car didn't run but I wanted it anyway, we tried to start it and it sounded like it had no compression, So It could have broke the timing belt/chain..(?)Which leads me to my last question, is the KA24E a interference motor? Thanks for the help.

Hey man, good luck. You have no Idea what you just got yourself into. A good running Nissan sports car is a dream come true, but a problematic not running Nissan is your worst nightmare. Trust me. I bought my Z in deplorable condition thinking it would be an easy fix. 4,000 bucks worth of repairing thing later and it's still a POS. But hey, it runs great now. lol.

My 240 is on the opposite end of the spectrum. It was taken care of and it's a dream come true. I love it.

However, I'm so attached to the Z that I can't sell it and I have to drive it once a week just for kicks. It's a total POS, but I just love to drive it.

Back on topic. The SOHC will make 140ish hp when it's running right. A KAT will always have more potential than a SR20 or CA18 because it has more displacement. However they are equally hard to do and equally expensive. ........Just for having a new engine, I'd go SR20 if I were you. However with my car, I'd much rather prefer a KA24DET (Mines a 93 ) but that wont happen for a while because I can't afford it.

As for the diff's. The best bang for the buck LSD would be a welded diff. lol. But that causes problems like massive tire wear and chirping tire on tight turns and undrivable in the snow. Being that you live in NY. I wouldn't recomend you do that. You would be best with a factory VLSD out of a J30.

IDK about interference, but it's a timing chain, not belt, so I highly doubt that it broke.

Have fun with your new project!!!!!

I bought a 93 that didnt run blown headgasket put a nother ka24de i pick up for some 12" and ran good but always had problems(I think I got a lemon). Now I have a 89 tore it down then replaced what was needed then swaped in a ka24de. LOVE the car now. Engine swap just pick up a ka24e or de and run na for awhile unless you have the cash to get a sr, rb, ca. As far as Lsd goes same as above j30. Good luck with the car post pictures.

Thanks for the input guys, When I get the car back or when I go and get ready to dolly it back next week I will take pics. I'm not trying to brag but I know my way around an engine bay and I think I can get the car running, if not..the local junkyard has a couple 5 speed 240's. So you guys say the J30 lsd, which is an infiniti, right? I checked out ebay and there is one for $385, $285, and $125 all BIN. Is that a bolt in "swap?" Or does anything need to be modified to put that differential in the 240?
