hey guys i recently picked up a vh45de out of a q45 for 75 bucks ( thinking somethings gotta be wrong with it, car was clean) well expecting the worst i hooked up the starter and put a lil oil in all 8 cylinders and did a compression test ... knowing it woudlnt be a legit test, i jsut wanted to see if it had compression and turned ok. sure enough ,made over 270 on all 8 cylinders. ( keep in mind this is from the oil) im assuming under normal conditions itll make 180-200

im going to take the front covers off tomorrow and make sure the timing is still good. now my questions are, why arent timing chain kits available online? is it nessecary to replace everything?(timing chain/guid/sprocket wise) can i just get the newer metal guides and call it a day? is there anything else i should definitely consider b4 i attempt to swap this into another car?

New guides + bolts plus both tensioners and new oil chain, sprockets and it's single tensioner are the components we replace, changing main chains adds 6-8 hours of work but if you have the valve cover off only 2 EXPERT hours.

Remember this is an interfearence engine one [usually 2] tooth off and trash it !

New knock sensor + harness, ALL new hoses, plus chain guide parts ~~~ $900 wholesale

tensioners are usually replaced but usualyl dont fail, so thats up to you... You might be able to score a set of metal guides from a 94 thats trashed, problem is 94s are hard to find that are bad.

why would i need a knock sensor and the wiring harness if they are in good shape? and if the chains look good i dont see any reason to replace them... do they tend to break? will nissan/infiniti sell me the NEWER metal guides and not the plastic ones ? and the tensioners?

You can ohm the knock sensors, but usualyl its not a bad idea to replace them while your in there because they are known to go bad. same thing with the harness, they just get brittle from age...

You can get just the metal guides from infiniti.. You cant get the plastic ones anymore, its a superceeded part number. Chains are maintenance free, really no reason to replace them IMO (except the oil pump chain, but thats cheap)..

Though the chains can stretch after time, right?

Not likely to break or anything, but if they do stretch a bit they may throw timing off ever so slightly.

I'm more of a timing belt guy myself.
