Alrighty.....at the risk of sounding like a real noob or anything, i was wonderin....what EXACTLY constitutes as an engine rebuild? I have heard that replacing your engine with forged internals and replacing your valve train and such is included as well as machine work such as port and polishing, extrude honed, etc....but i still dont know what is the limit in which your engine is rebuilt, yet it seems like everyone else does. So...my real question is...what would i have to do my engine to know that it is rebuilt to handle things like....uh....boost? btw its a 91 ka w/ 209k miles.

the most bare bones basic rebuild...

make sure everything is within factory specsreplace piston ringsreplace all bearingsreplace all sealsreplace all gasketsreplace themostatreplace water pumpreplace everything that's included in a basic tune-up

everything else is just icing on the cake.

thanks!!....thats pretty much the answer i was looking for. Now i just gotta take care of those and get hopefully get started with the icing...oh but one more thing. In reference to machine work...how much procedures are actually out there when it comes to the engine?....as in p+p, extrude honed, balance, blueprinted, etc....i know the is more but if its too much to list then i understand.....i remember there was a thread posted a while ago about most of them explaining what they were and what exactly they do for the car, i will search for that in a moment

Port and polish is where they take a grinder and enlarge the area where air flows into and out of the head. Thats the porting part. Polishing is where they then smooth that rough surface down for better airflow.

Extrude honing is when they run an abrasive material through your intake or exhaust manifold and it enlarges and smoothes down all the passages inside it for greater airflow.

Balancing is where they take the entire rotating assembly (pistons, rods, crank, flywheel, damper) and spin it and take some weight out of the crank counter weights to make sure the entire assembly spins true and balanced, cause if it spins out of balance it can throw a rod at higher RPMs.

Blueprinting is where they check all the tolerances against factory specs, something like that.

Ideal balancing would be achieved by removing weight to the crank but usually it requires adding tungsten weight. Results from improper balancing is usually a broken crank or premature bearing failure not broken rods. Blueprinting is a missused word for recording of all the clearances and other specs. Allways replace the oil pump, and timing chain set! The oil pump is the heart pumping life giving oil to all the major components. If the timing chain slips then you will atleast have bent all valves.Hope this helps, Open4Cycle

OK. I'll throw another related question out for discussion (may have been addressed in another thread but...) at what point would you NEED forged internals (realize I know very little about forced induction) ie below what boost level is this just overkill or is it always a good idea. Main reason I'm asking is because I'm looking at boosting an S14 but want it to be fairly reliable and durable (as much as can be expected considering it didn't come boosted from the factory). I'm not looking for huge numbers... 250-300 whp would be about all I want. Anyway, thanks for any input.

250-300whp would be cake on the stock block (as long as it's in good condition), just make sure it gets a good dyno tune. And psi doesn't matter, just what power you'll be making.

Think of forged internals as insurance, rather then a next step to run a certain level of boost.
