Probably a stupid question, but would sound be about the same if I just changed out the stock mufflers with Magnaflows? I know the so-called performance would be miniscule...

Magnaflow makes a lot of different mufflers, including OE and OEM units. You have to be more specific.

This as an example: https://www.magnaflow.com/products/1226 ... ce-muffler

But, I'm thinking, why is it necessary to replace the piping as you see in these kits you see at Z1 Motorsports, etc?

That one will make your car louder and likely add a lot of drone. The reason exhaust systems are better than just adding a muffler is because the system is tuned, not only for power but for sound to eliminate unwanted drone at cruising RPM. Ever heard a civic with a s*** muffler cruising down the freeway making your teeth vibrate? That's the drone.

Can confirm, the magnaflows don't do a damn thing for power, and only serve to piss off me and my passengers, as well as passersby. Horrid drone between 2-3k, which is where the average person spends their time on the road.

However, it does create a sound somewhat like a GT car above 3k, so..
