me and my co-worker was talking about the mustang and any import...

he argues that if you put $40,000 into a mustang (fox body up to 93), that he can beat any import in straight line or the autocross...

i bring up the 240sx...i say if you do a swap, maybe rb26 with a rb25 transmission, up grade turbo, all other goodies, suspension, i say it could out handle the mustang but will loose in the quarter...he says $40,000 into a stang will waste any import in every way...

the reason we got $40,000 as the amount was we were just talking about the new vettes....and thinking of what we could do with $40,000 instead...

I'm sure this has been discussed several times but give me your quick opinion on it or give me a link...

so would any import loose in every competition wise to a stang? give me your inputs...

who cares and why bother?

you are stuck to import and he's stuck to mustang. hell I'll buy you a tank of 91 gas if you can sway him... knowing you will not be able to.

Wait, so $40k+Mustang to beat any STOCk Import in straight line or autox? Or any similarly priced import with $40k in mods?

Honestly, an Evo with $40k in mods would most certainly outhandle a heavily modded Mustang, and highly modified Evos can get their 0-60s down to like 3.5 sec or lower, which is like Henessy Venom territory.

Honestly, I don't think your friend has any idea what he's talking about, but you're never going to convince him of that. Just kick him in the sack a couple of times and call it a day:-P

Yep he's right, it'll take $40,000 for a mustang to spank some stock imports.

Hell if its any car + $40K. I'd take an R33 +$40K and have that 1000hp on the strip. I'm not fimilar enough with what can be done to a mustang to make it handle better, but its still gonna be pretty heavy.

hell, why go w/that much... buy a 3rd gen mr2 (mr-s) for 10k, drop a 2zz, a decent adjustable strut and some tires, and call it a day.

I'd say drag racing is the mustang's territory and not the 240s. And the complete inverse for autox.

thats what im trying to say...

to give the topic alittle bit more background...he was saying he'd take a 90 or so 5.0 + $40,000, i say i'd take a s13 240 + $40,000...

i know he can probably hit single digits with ease but i'm telling him with that $40,000, i can do 11's or even 10's all day and still take him in the auto x...he says he'd just get a rear indepent suspension for $3,000 and that alone is enough to waste anything i can get for handling...

well anyways, you guys are probably right...he's gonna be stuck on his stang so whatever...

i'm just trying to get into his head that his stang wouldn't be able to outhandle a 240 with the right suspension and body stiffening mods...

then again, it is kinda pointless arguing with someone who's too convinced that his stang will outdue any import...

I'll take $40k and put it in a 1.6L Miata... lol. I don't care what you got, $40k sunken in a Miata with a good driver is insane in Auto-x.

to be very good at either drag or autox you need to build a very specialized car. What is good for one is not necessaryily good for the other. Like the 90/10 front suspension in a hardcore drag car would be horrible in autox cause you would probably lose control if you accelerated in a turn. If you were making a hybrid it all depends on what exactly is done. With that amount you could probably get close to 1000hp out of a rb26, but streetability would be nonexistant. The mustang has the initial disadvantage of weight, which I think is harder to overcome with technology/upgrades than lower HP (like the 240.) I would guess, as you did, that one would be better in each category, but good luck trying to convince someone of that without actually doing it. People are too stubborn.

$40,000 into a 240 and $40,000 into a mustang.

as much as i hate say it, i think a mustang would own the 240

i mean you could drop in a GT40 motor for liek 5k(seen it in a catalog) and then 35k more to mod it and what not

umm $40,000 in any car would make it fast. $40,000 in a honda civic would make it fast.

I mean make it challenging, say $15,000 in the stang wouldnt be able to beat a miata at auto X

Everyone has a good point, 40,000 into any car will make it do well at whatever you put that money into, whether it is autocross or drag racing. However, it will probably never be the best car because of how the car is set up and was built. From the examples given here, the Mustang is heavy, but has a big displacement engine that is capable of making massive horsepower and even more torque, so it is best suited for drag racing. The 240sx IMO is pretty well balanced, fairly light, has an engine that has been known to make a lot of power (with either KA-T or SR) this could do pretty well for road course racing, autocrossing or could be swapped with the bigger RBs and do fairly well in drag racing. The Miata is a featherweight compared to the first two and even without making enormous amounts of power can make good times in road course racing and autocrossing, but will be hard to beat either in a drag race.

yeah i know...and like i said, i know a stang 5.0 can get into the single digits without a sweat...the big displacement is crazy...

just kinda bugs my mind that he would say that it would be able to outhandle any import as well... i'm just thinking that thats just bullsh!t

like you guys were saying, put in a nice balanced sr into a 240 and you could do 12's, high or mid 11's even without a sweat with 400 reliable horses and would kill in the autox...

some people just think their cars can do everything...

At least he doesn't think his car is better because his speedometer goes higher than yours! One of my friends has an oldsmobile and has this problem. I just shake my head when he brings it up. Maybe I should race him...

he thinks a mustang would own auto-x, or any kind of test of handling for that matter, ask him if hes ever actually gone to an auo-x event, where, o look the imports own. 4wd eclispses, wrx, miatas, s2000s, rx-7s, when i actually see 240s then they always run good, but i dont see them much at these events, but even stuff like audis and bimmer 3 series, the occasional vette, but never does any mustang run that good, even with irs.

Hey!!! My SR 240 only has 115 on the speedo and the 91 Mazda 323 Hatchback (go-kart) goes up to 140!!! Do you mean I spent all this $$ on my 240 and it's still slower?

haha, i'm forced to drive this 323 while a new fuel pump is being shipped to me. My walbro 255 pump took a crap and heavythrottle sent me a new one right away. This 323 is also LOUDer than my SR w/ apex'i N1. The piping before the muffler rusted away completely.
