i was reading the archived posts. my car is starting to have a starter problem. once in a while it sounds like the starter is fialing. i checked the forums and foubnd out it was a problem with either the flywheel or the starter. i was wondering if there is a way to pinpoint exactly which one is failing? furthermore if the transmission and the engine is the same as a 300zx could i pick up an aftermarket light flywheel for a 300zx n/a AT? just an idea on fixing a problem.

you have to drop the trans to change the flex plate (flywheel is for a MT car, technically).....

I dont even know if they sell an aftermarket flex plate for the auto trans that is performance orientated?????

you can take the starter out and hand crank the engine to see if theres teeth missing on the starter... if there is, then thats your problem.

bump***

i was on the highway doing 120km/h and i lined up against an audi 1.8t. he looks at me and slams on his accelerator. naturally i react too. so the engine downshifts and started revving as if it was in neutral i could hear it trying to grip the gear. i let it go and i hear a bang and the car shook. i tried it again twice more and same result before giving up so that my transmission doesnt fail. it feels like the flywheel(flex plate) is slipping, maybe thats why the starter noise is happening. i tried to test the system a few minutes later ater the failure at 1/2 throttle, the car accelerates and it went to 200km/hr (125miles/hr for the usa folks ) it just took a while to get there. then i let off and let the car slow down back to 100km(60 miles/hr) then i tried testing it at full throttle andf the transmission downshifted and it grabbed the gear fine, tried it a couple of more times and it was fine. this boggles me.. is the transmission failing or is the flex plate just worn out due to high milage? i need some advice, i called around and it would be cheaper to just buy a new transmission than get a new flex plate. i can get a transmission of a jdm car for 300$ and install 100$ with the kms showing on a front clip but i need to figure this out so that i may take the next step.

i am very disapointed when the gear grips the car does bolt with alot of torque

your flexplate wont slip, if anything its the torque covnerter or something inside the transmission...... The TC is bolted right ot the flexplate.

If you hear a grinding, it's your flywheel along with the accompanying hard start. Up here total transmission failures on the J (especially non high mileage ones are rare), however rev sensor failure is common. You will be driving around and suddenly your transmission will refuse to shift into the next gear.
