I've yet to receive my N license (for all you non-Canadians, its the license after the Learners and before the full license)but I've already been thinking about my first car (I'm 17 btw)So I have a few questions;

Would the A/C been a good first car?Would it be unreasonable to look for a 2.5S model with all the packages for around 20k?Would the insurance destroy me?How much would the purchase and installation of the Stillen front fascia and side skirts & HID lights cost?

I am a secondary school student that just got accepted into the University of British Columbia, so I have tuition fees to consider too, now would this all be out of reach for me?

P.S Anyone around the Vancouver area know if there are shops selling the Stillen fascia and skirts?

I need to be slapped by reality with how possible this all is to buy so I dont go dreaming for too much, but that doesnt mean you get to flame me thanks!

This is just my opinion, but I've always been one of those that thinks a first car should be inexpensive and not the prettiest thing on the block. I'm 19 and I started out at 16 on a 1980 Station Wagon before moving up to a 1994 Accord and now my 2003 Nissan Altima. Parents have never paid a penny on any of my vehicles. Start out with something that is practical and easy on the wallet and then move up to the Altima Coupe once you can comfortably afford it. That's what I would do, not necessarily what I'm telling you to do.

I don't believe the Altima Coupe would be a good first car especially going to post-secondary at the time. Prices on the Coupe up here in Canada are insane; I'm paying over 40 thousand for my loaded 3.5 when I get it.. I think a 2.5 with all the packages would be closer to 30 thousand up here. The Fascia and HID's together would set you back under 1000.00 to get em shipped.

I believe you have to get the Stillen products shipped.

Yes it would be a good first car, no you wont get it for 20K, your 17 driving a 25-30K brand new car, and have an N or G2 license, and assuming you are a male driving a two door coupe, you might as well bend over and let the insurance company fist you every month, as least you would here in Ontario. Insurance wise you have everything going against you, I would not be in the least surprised if your insurance payments are more then the monthly car payments.

Just to give you a heads up on how much the insurance works against you, up until I got my coupe. I was 24 had a full license (9+ years total of driving), and was a secondary driver on my 07 Camry LE with a clean driving record (no accidents or tickets) and my insurance company quoted me 250$. After I turned 25 and my moms car died she bought my Camry, I bought my coupe. I pay 210$, 40$ less even though its a 3.5 V6 two door, 40K$ car. Compared to a 2.5L I4 4 door 25K Camry, and I am the primary driver on my 3.5 coupe. Until you are 25 your rates are going to be higher, the value of the car (more value, higher the rates), your sex (males pay more then females), record (bad record the higher it goes), two doors pay more then 4 doors, and depending on the car you could pay more, civics get stolen a lot and young males get them to be fast and furious so there so if you have a civic it will go up as well. Oh as well as brand Infiniti's cost more to insure then Nissans.

Well, I'm 25 with a clean driving record, and I'm paying $215/month with Aviva insurance on my 2.5. Stock, the car totaled at about $29000 (and that's including taxes), so my monthly lease payments are $412/month for 48 months with a final buyout value of $11,700. I work in the adult industry (photoshop editor...NOT an "actor" haha) so I get paid a helluva lot more than most students will. I'm currently in my last year of school so I can't really work full-time, and if I didn't have the job that I do, there's no way I could afford to make payments on the car AND pay for tuition as well.

So,1) Insurance companies will rape you raw until you turn 252) Unless everything is being paid for you (ie. books, tuition, food, rent), I highly doubt you'll be able to afford it.3) You might be able to find a private seller who really wants to get one off their hands for about 20K, but it'll probably be a private sale and unless you've got that kind of $$$ just sitting around, your interest rates for financing a used car will be pretty ridiculous.

The point is...just get yourself an older Sentra/Tercel/Echo/Corolla/Protege/Lancer, build yourself a spotless driving record, and in a few years you'll be able to throw down for a nice 3.5 (or a G if you're so inclined!)

Good luck mate!Cheers, - Eric

BTW, don't you guys in BC have to keep that F*****G "N" for like four years or something now? I remember being there when it had JUST started and I only had to keep mine up for 14 months or something like that...yeesh...DAMN YOU ICBC!!!! lol

Thanks for all your input guys I forgot to put in my first post that I'm planning on buying a used A/C in Seattle, but I'll probably just persuade my mom to keep her Volvo so I can drive it (she's planning on selling it for a new Volvo)

....Sigh, my parents are actually loaded, but they refuse to spend any money on me after I turn 18 (which includes car, tuition, etc)

It teaches you good life values. Besides; it's a lot more rewarding when you purchase something that is a direct result of your own hard work. My friends parents are loaded as well, for his 17th birthday they bought him a brand new BMW M3 - two months later he nails a light pole after peeling out of a parking lot.

What do they do? Go out and buy him a Lexus sedan. Unbelievable.

This kid is spoiled rotten; actually beyond spoiled rotten.

I wouldn't be surprised if his parents buy him his own house down the road.

Father is a dentist, Mother is a lawyer.

They're actually pretty low profile. She drives a Escalade and he drives his CTS.

The problem is whenever their kid asks for anything he gets it; it doesn't matter what it is. They don't know how to say no simply put.
