what is an "OBD" 1, 2, ect... and what does it do? Also, if you change your cams for performance, must you get a new crankshaft and valves? If so what is the difference in valves, is it length, or the width of the valve?

OBD = OnBoard Diagnostic

OBDII started in '96 and ran through 2007 (maybe this year, something around now), OBDI was from about '90 or a little earlier til '96. It's basically a quick way of seeing what's going on with the car. It's a universal system of codes for finding many faults in the car for easier diagnosis and repair. It's most commonly known for emissions testing. From '96 on, vehicles are tested with a simple plug-in test rather than a full on sniffer in the tailpipe.

You don't have to change the crankshaft for sure. They're not even remotely related parts, mechanically. You also don't need to change out the valves, though many people add heavy duty valve springs set for a higher rpm limit to take advantage of the added power in the upper rev ranges.

Valves are round, so size differences are a matter of diameter.
