Hello all My name is Tristan, I work for a Shop in Conway, Arkansas called Motorsports Authority. We currently own:1989 240 coupe (ka24E)1990 240 hatch (ka24de)1989 240 coupe (ka24e AUTO)1989 240 coupe (shell)1995 240 coupe (ka24de)

I personally own the one of the 89' coupes. I am having a few problems with it.

First: The HUD didnt work, so i decided to take the WORKING HUD out of our shell, Well it didnt work in my car. So last night we pulled the speed sensor thinking it was the problem, we did the little probe test and it read around 0.3volts i belive. Is this enough to make it work, or should i be in the market for a new speed sensor, OR should i just try to figure out if i burnt up some wires some where?

Second: The fuel gauge on the working HUD we swapped in read a little more fuel than the my 240. Does that self level or do i need to go throw a full tank in and re-alaign it?

Thanks in advanceTristan WingfieldSales manager / tuner http://www.motorsportsauthority.com

First: You need to verify that the speedo actually works on the good HUD, you said it came out of a good known HUD cluster....???? Take it out and recheck to make sure still works. Maybe when you tried during troubleshooting got damaged by the bad cluster....If still good then you have a problem somewhere in the car...but is very rare. Old HUD's are very delicate and sensitive to changes in voltage and temperature....

Second: I way i done it in the past, get full tank and very carefully realign the fuel needle with your fingers to the MAX fuel spot....be very careful, dont force it....

Well the HUD That was in the vehicle originally (That we took out, we thought it didnt work) We put into the shell and all the speedo and HUD lights worked.

I belive the speedo and HUD work just fine. I think its either the speed sensor OR the wiring. (seeing as we've found some less than attractive RE-wirring from the previous owner of the vehicle for other acc.)

thanks for the input guys.

Tris

If there was rewiring done in any of the Acc's items.... I have $20 that says your problem is in the wiring somewhere....

I have 20$ on it too. So that makes 40$ dude were gonna be RICH!!!!

Does any one have the pinout for the cluster wiring harness? I just hot line them in!

Ok so the latest in the SAGA that is my HUD and SPEEDO...

Replaced the two wires that go from the speed sensor to the cluster. That didnt do JACK.

Replaced the TIMER control box. That didnt do JACK...

I have the wiring diagram for the cluster and it shows that the RED/BLACK wire powers the HUD control unit, Well that same red black line powers the interior light, Clock, radio, all of these things except the HUD and SPEEDO work.

does the HUD work off the SPEEDO, or are they basically the same thing?(meaning same wires.)

Im not really sure what are you asking...??:\ but you can have a perfectly working cluster without the speedo display working....so think they are independent of each other when it comes to getting power and showing a display....Yes the red/black wire is the power going to the cluster...make sure you check also the blue wire....

A couple of other checks: Make sure you are trying the right cluster in the right car...SOHC on a SOHC....just in case...

Check the real OEM NISSAN FSM for a better wiring diagram of the HUD cluster....double check all the wires going into the cluster, make sure you are using a known good cluster....also check all your fuses, yes again....

Hey bro i've checked and RE-checked all the wires, fuses, relays... Still no luck.If i can score an analog cluster and the cluster sub-harness will that plug and play? All of our coupes at the shop are SOHC so that cant be it, will the twin-cam analog cluster work on my Single cam?Is there a MAJOR ground for the HUD that maybe i am missing?

ThanksTris

Man, can I get a free t-shirt or discount or something.....???? Just kidding...!!!If you try to use a DOHC on a SOHC, (or viceversa)your readings will be erratic...due to the different signals and sensors...it will not work....To swap back to analog all you need is the right cluster (SOHC or DOHC)and the wiring subharness for it...yes is all plug and play. You can try it, but I think you are going to run into problems because most of the signals use to drive the HUD cluster are also use to drive the analog. The main difference is in input of the speedo module where the signals go into the speedo back digital circuits and are "switch" to digital, and show a speed reading in the digital display. If you have (??) experience with wiring diagrams, you can see this in the FSM diagrams. Here is a plan:Install an analog cluster...check all your gauges and identify what works and what doesn't....it should match the HUD symptoms...and by looking at the wiring diagram you just verified what your problems are...you know is in the car wiring and not the cluster, right??? Other than the signals you see going in into the cluster, you will not need anything else. You dont even need the reflector dash HUD unit plug in for the cluster to work...it will still show digital speed on the cluster itself. Is the car headlights, auto seat belts, warning lights, etc working correctly in the car? If not, then thats a sign of possible miswiring in the vehicle also...man Im tired of typing, hopefully this helps. Let me know, Im in NICO pretty much all day long...

The drivers seat belt does not work, but everything else DOES. I'm just gonna put a Apex-I REV/SPEED meter in it and be done. Also just so i dont get pulled over on the freeway or in my town, At what RPM are you @ at around 75mph in 5th (17's with 215/40's) also the RPM for 55mph
