Im trying to get this 95 J30 that I purchased for 500.00 dollars back up to par but don't know where to start....This is my second J30......It has 225,000 miles on it and when driving I hear a whistling sound....It gets louder as i press the gas.....when it idles you can hear it as well.....almost like its the belts or something.....there is a major rattling noise when i cut on the a/c....sounds like industrial size hair clippers.....hen there's this smell of gas at times....not sure of what it can be.......Im just trying to figure out where i need to start .......Any suggestions...(besides driving it off a cliff??)

i would start with the gas smell, it is dangerous.... it is common for the VG series engines to leak some gas from the fule pressure regulator line, check that first, and get it fixed.... get some fule hose and fule clamps (dont get regular clamps, they dont work).... it should be an easy fix.... trace the smell first, and make sure that it is from there, if it is not from there, then post your updates

about the squeal..... start the engine, and while it is still cold, trace all belts and update us on which pully is the noise coming from exactly (i bet it is the AC idler pulley), if it is the AC idler, then the sound would be very clear from the bottom.....

i have no idea about the rattle, can you give more details?

i believe a member (yodawill2000) here just recently had the same problem with their A/C idler pulley, which would also explain the rattling when turning on your A/C. i'm parting out my J30 at the moment and he replaced his with mine and as far as i know it fixed the problem. If this is the problem, which it sounds like is, then swapping out the pulley is a really easy process especially if you can find a used cheap one somewhere. But if you need any other parts for your J then just let me know. [email protected] GL! and welcome to NICO!!

Thanks guys ...I tell ya what....You guys make it so much easier for alot of Infiniti owners....Im truly grateful to have found this site.....So check it....I went and had the hoses and belts replaced....(3) belts to be exact and that took care of the squealing......I asked them to see if they could pinpoint the rattling...and of course when they cut the ac on it didnt rattle....So on my way home i stopped at a store....When i was backing out and leaving....it rattled BIG TIME in reverse...I mean it was loud ....almost like something metal under the car is vibrating...it sounds as if its coming from under the car front driver side....not a clue as to what it could be for now...but i'll keep trying to pinpoint.....Also .....I havn't smelled any gas after the work today was done so i think im good there....Now with 225k miles.....should i be concerned with the engine and transmission.....????

No, it wouldn't explain the rattle when turning on the A/C as that pulley spins all the time not just when the A/C is on.

It is a common problem on the J. When I got my 94 the air didn't work. The first oil change I found the problem. There was no belt on the A/C compressor. That pulley had failed and the PO had just cut the belt to be able to drive the car. The pulley had completely siezed up.

I had a rattle sound similar to what you are describing. It ended up being the alternator on the way out. It actually sounded like an exhaust shield rattling around except that it was coming from the very front of the car. It would get worse sounding when you put a load on it. (Like turning on the A/C or the lights.)

When we buy $500 Q and J they are truely in grave condition only useful to strip out parts to repair other $2-$3,000 vehicles.
