Hey. New to the forum one of the 510 club member posted a link on our boards.

Anyways I'm tryign to cram a turbo SOHC into my 69 510. Most of the nissan board keep telling to just slap the turbo onto the engien and run liek 5 psi... I dont feel safe doing that. the KA pistons and rods like twigs with a paper cup put on top. I really dont; trust them seeing as I fall into the stereo typical 510 drivers catagory. Foot to the floor.

My freind and I have bean looking through all the engien specs and what not and from what I can see the Z22 has a larger dish and stronger rods. By rights the pistons SHOULD fit the KA without any boring or anything and bring the compression down. however what will the piston deck hight end up at? I don;t want to be smacking the valves but I don;t want any lower then 7:1 compression. I think 9:1 is far to high for likings. I want a high boost engine..just becuase.. no real reason just cause I can. ( we have a local 510 running a turbo L20b with 10:1 static compression and some 18 pounds of boost. 360 RWH dyno proven. runs on aviation fuel water and methenol injection)

but anyways. what pistons and rods can I jam into my SOHC to lower the compression and deal with forced induction. I'm trying to keep the costs WAY down so custom foged stuff is out of the question.

lil back ground on the engien and stuff. its a sohc from a 89 240SX has around 120 000k on it. Turbo is a Garret T3 from a 280ZX turbo bol,ted to my own manifold I welded up. Exaust will be 3 inch splitting to dual 2 inch and some sort of turbo mufflers... duno what ones yet.

heres the car its going in. I grenaded the L16 racing the club prez in his 2.2 BRE replica.

KAs can handle 10psi on stock internals with fuel and tuning.

it's not like the interals come forged from the factory or the rods are shotpeened....oh ....wait...they are.

10psi with fuel and tuning is by all means safe.

The only issue I see with this and a 510 and your bad boy foot to floor attitude is the SOHCs lack of revvability. Spring for a DOHC motor if it makes a difference to you.

I got the whole 240SX with the SOHC for 300 bucks..only reason I'm going with a SOHC.

From what I've read and heard though the stock rings and pistons fail quite easily.

Well, the rods are quite beefy, unless you're looking at real high power. But of course you're not because you're looking to do this cheap. And if it's a later '89 (not sure on the month), it will have 8.6:1 compression already. If it's an earlier model - 9.0:1.The stock pistons/rings aren't really much good past 12-15psi, depending on you talk to, for too long anyway.

Good luck. :)

hey, this is what i'll be putting on my 510 also, KAE-t. Search the boards a little more and you'll find that the stock engine can be boosted pretty good. Just make sure you have the right fuel mixtures and the engine will perform great. Internals are fine if you tune your car right. The only problem with the ka in a 510 is that the engine has great torque and the 510 will have problems hooking up since its so light. Other than that, make sure the compression is good across all cylinders, check the the timing belt and guides, and boost away.

Also, if you haven't installed the KA yet, I recomend that you put the KA in first without boosting to see if everything will start up. Then put in the turbo. Just easier to trouble shoot if the engine fails to start up.

Should be a fun ride, good luck!

The KA24E will handle boost just fine....period. Nuff said about that. As with all forced induction motors, as boost increases so does the cylinder pressure. So you just need to insure your suffering from detonation. Eliminate that and you should be fine till atleast 350whp. Again, this all hinges on tuning.

IIRC, if it has an intake air temp sensor on the airbox, it was the 8.6:1...

There's a Nissan TSB floating around the 'net that tells of the changes...the compression change and the IAT sensor go hand in hand.
