ok, so today im driving my car back from wall-mart and as i turn onto the high was i notcied my autometer tach jumping (looked like someone was flicking it) it would only jump like 250-500 rpm and so far only in the 3,000 to 3,500 rpm range in gears 3 4 and 5 (not as much in five). i also watched my stock tach in the dash and does the same thing just only about 85% of the times the autometer does.

The autometer tach takes its rpm signal directly off of MSD 6A ignition box.

So far the jumps have been like momentary, it jumps once and then goes back to working normal. I think it could be a slightly slipping clutch b/c i have the original clutch in from 1989. and the one time the jumping lasted for like 3 seconds it felt similar but not exactly like a slipping clutch.

i also remembered that i degreased my eingine bay the other day so it might be a little bit of water in the distributor cap.

Absolutely, water could do that. Check your connections at the distributor, coil, and module for corrosion. You may want to check continuity from there to about 6 inches back, no more that about 5 ohms. You may then want to clean the connectors and pack them with dilelectric. It sounds like you are getting a bad tach signal or you have bad grounds.
