Alright, I'm starting a build thread... I'll update as I progress through the build... I'll be assembling an S14 block from the short block up. I'll include pictures and offer explanations and answers for those that ask..

What I have so far...

Assembled S14 bottomend with the following...

JE 86.5mm x 8.5:1 pistonsEagle rodsARP main, rod and head studsCosworth main and rod bearingsCosworth 1.5mm HG

Other items going into the mix...

Toda 264* 10.5mm IN/EX cams with NVCS Supertech DVSTomei RASNew timing equipNew oil pump and pickupCrank Scraper and Windage tray

I'll eventually add an oil cooler setup, and other miscellaneous items to protect my investment.... I'm shooting for a measly 400rwhp on a GT2871r .64 but building the block to hold more for longetivity and possible upgrades in the future (i.e. GT3071R TS)...

Now for some pictures of the bottomend...

***Update*** 11/1/08

I had some time to work on the engine today, got the timing guides in and the chain resting there. Also installed the ARP head studs and set the cosworth on the block. I'm waiting for the new oil pump to get here so I can put that on and trq down the head...

I'm debating whether or not to clay the engine, to see just how close my pistons are going to come to the valves... It's just alot of work to do it.

Pictures!!!

***Update*** 11/11/08

Installed the head and got it torqued down tonight. It's coming along smoothly so far, knock on wood. I've yet to order a few things, need rear main seal, water pump, thermostat, along with other misc items. I'm waiting for my crank scraper and windage tray to get here. I'll have to modify the upper oil pan so that the pan isn't hitting the scraper in the 4th bay. So far I'm happy, next one I should have the lifters, rockers, cams and scraper in...

Pictures!!!

In this picture you can see the slight port and polish I have on the intake side of the head...

Enjoy...!

Man sure hope mine looks like that in a few weeks. I am basically doing the same thing. Shooting for about 400 hp, but I want it to be strong and reliable so I can just enjoy it. Keep us updated for sure.

I actually bought my bearings from Stillen... I couldn't find many dealers for Cosworth bearings and they just happened to be the cheapest...

I need to update this, it's been quite some time.

Well, since I started this build thread, I've blown my S14 trans.. So that led to the purchase of a Mazworx Z32 trans kit... And while I had the trans out I decided that I would just go ahead and put the built motor in at the same time. So needless to say, my car has been down since mid Jan, for a complete build up... I have since changed the route I was going with the turbo and am now purchasing a top mount kit for the car...

Pictures, because no one likes reading...

Prepped to come out...

Coming out...

Here is a shot of the engine bay as it sits now. I cleaned alot and it looks very nice.

The new FMIC, it's an HKS type S, good for roughly 600HP. If you don't want to do alot of cutting, don't buy this FMIC...

Back to the motor build...

Modified upper oil pan. The baffles needed to be ground down and the hump had to be cut out and welded up to allow for the crank scraper inside the gridle. The recessed holes you see are for the ARP's and two bolts that hold the windage tray on. I also had a bung welded to the side of the pan for the oil catch can drain/return.

Here are a few shots of the crank scraper/windage tray...

I had all the engine brackets powdercoated arcitectual bronze...

Mazworx adapter bolted up...

Z32 trans slapped on... I weighed the SR trans vs the Z32 trans and it's about a 30lbs difference. The SR's was 97lbs and the Z32's was 123lbs.

I am waiting on my catch can setup, being built right now, and my IM to come back from being extrude honed. Then I just need to order the Topmount kit and I'll need lots of tuning on the Haltech. Thanks for looking

Looks good. How do you like the transmission adapter? I'm probably going to pick one up as my build gets going.

It is a very well made piece... My only concern is that there are only 5 actual bolts that hold the trans to the adapter plate. I may drill some holes around the bottom of the trans to allow for a few more. But all in all, it's awesome.

Well I guess if it doesn't break on their drag car then we have no chance ourselves.

You should be fine with the 5 bolts.

The transmission doesn't weight that much to cause enough shearing stress to break the bolts. And thot bolts are pretty big as it is.

Awsome build btw

I'm going Peakboost top mount GT3071R with Tial 44mm v-band gate... I've kept an eye on your build although I haven't actually posted in the thread. Thanks for looking, you're build looks awesome as well. Did you decide what engine management you were going to run yet?

I finished some more work on the car this past week. I dropped the motor back in, installed the supplied DS from Mazworx, which fits better than my 1-piece DSS did and did all modifications to get the shifter bolted in. I'm still waiting for my IM to come back from getting extrude honed, I can't wait to get it back, just to see the inside of it...

In order for the shifter to be installed you have to find the center of the shifter bracket (mounted to the back of the trans on Z32's) and drill a 2"hole with a holesaw on the trans tunnel of the 240. The kit comes with the shifter cover plate as you'll see in the pictures. I didn't like the idea of not having anything actually sealing around it so, I grabbed a piece of 1/8in thick rubber material at work and used it as my gasket. This will help keep the majority of crap outside, although it won't be completely water tight, but that's ok because I don't plan to take my 240 swimming.

The shifter sits noticeable back further and closer to the driver, which is a good thing, no more stretching to shift. I did notice that when shifting in to 2/4/R the shifter actually hits the centerconsole a bit (trim piece with the boot), but that can be lived with/address later on down the road if need be. It's not enough to keep it from shifting into the gears.

On to the pictures...

Wow. When you said it was close/hitting the trim, I didn't imagine that it sat that far back. Thanks for the pics. I was thinking about using either the Z32 transmission or the NISMO reinforced SR 6sp. I am subscribing to this one now.

Yeah it's back there. To be honest, if it were me, I wouldn't waste the extra dough on the Nismo re-enforced 6-spd, it's still going to have a limit. The Z32 trans is known to hold quite a bit of power... I've seen/heard of 1000rwhp without a problem. My buddy use to own a 550rwhp Z32, he said he prefers that trans over his Supra Getrag, just because they are so crisp and tight. He says the Getrag is clunky... Hope this helps at all... Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the advise. You know the NISMO transmission is a delusion of grandure (sp) and is prolly out of my pocket depth.

Once you get the beast running/driving, let us know how it shifts and feels going into gear. BTW I am watching this one as well as a few others.

So, I recieved a special delivery at work today... My intake manifold came back from being extrude honed. All I have to say is wow, that abrasive material does an amazing job. It's really hard to tell/appreciate how well it's been smoothed/polished inside but hopefully the reflection of the flash on the camera will give you an idea. Overall, I'm very pleased. On to the pictures...

First few shots are of the IM plenum..

These are pictures of the runners, I did one of the lower and one of the plenum. They all look like this...
