well first, I'm not sure that there is an actual "auto engineering," you might have to go with mechanical engineering or something like that... I'm not so sure though.
a friend of mine is doing civil engineering right now, and the way it works for him is that he works a number of internships over the summer at local engineering firms (probably doing gopher work or whatever), but when he gets out of school one of them might hire him as an apprentince or something like that, and end up paying for his graduate studies.
Not sure about the TYPES of jobs you'd do though. I'm sure you can do whatever interests you once you have the degree. You just need to find a company to work for.
