I came across the JGYcustoms website and stumbled across this:

Looks like a SR20 Greddy (style) intake manifold welded onto a KA intake manifold flange.

JGYcustoms is charging $550 for this... how stupid, im sure it can be done for way less if you DIY.

Does anyone think this will gain any power over stock? Feedback

Heres the link: http://www.jgycustoms.com/ka24det.htm

Thx for giving me credit for linking that to you EFFER!!! Anyways...that idea was brought up by my friend too. Welding a greddy intake plenum to the stock KA runners..and figuring out all the kinks. $550 is OUCH! You can prob do a better job for $300-$350. But that would put you in range of the GroundZero one..which looks better made too.

Sure it can be done cheaper if you buy an ebay intake mani for a ess arr, and do all your own welding(or get it done for you even). You could even take a few hours of your life and use a hacksaw to get through the runners.

However, that price isnt that bad for what your getting really. That style of plenum owns.

My only concern is that it wouldnt clear the hood. I cant see them making something that wouldnt clear but still, looks like it would sit really high on the motor.

On a side note, the manifold that they chose to do that picture with has some pretty bad welds.. Not like they will ever cause you any problems just mentioning it.

Without back to back dyno comparisons I wouldn't touch an aftermarket intake.

The JGY is old news btw...

Like alot of intake manifolds for the KA out there, no dyno sheets.

I think I might try this since I have a spare intake manifold laying around. Just gotta spend the $$$ to buy a Freddy intake manifold off a ESSSS ARRRR.

Gains would probably be similiar to a SR20 with the same intake manifold. I ran a Greddy intake manifold on my SR20 and man, the low end sucked after swapping it on but after 5k rpms is where the fun begins.

Yeah I know JGY has sort of a bad name but this idea doesn't look too shabby.

It doesn't look like the intake runners were the same size "ID". The runners need to be straight and smooth...those don't apear to be either. Need to see one up close.

Looks like ***.

If I wanted a hack job, I'd do it myself.

I'd like to see more pictures because as WD said, it doesn't look like the runners match up...

This is humorous because I just got done reading a huge argument in the DSM world over a certain name-brand intake manifold for the evo.

Intake manifolds are very complicated components. There is a very specific set of parameters that need to be considered when designing/building/tuning for an intake manifold. You need to figure out a target RPM range, plenum volume, plenum shape, intake runner length, intake runner diameter, valve timing, and cam lift. All of these things work together to optimize an intake manifolds design or they will dictate the design of the intake manifold that will gain your particular setup the most gain.

Judging solely by the looks of that thing and assuming that it is an SR plenum on a KA runner, I don't think they did any engineering for that part. Until it's proved otherwise, I'm believing it's a half-assed hack job.

You are correct my friend, chopping the intake runners and adding a surge tank that's similar in style to something more popular IE the Veilside or Greddy intake is purely cosmetic and has not undergone ANY design and testing.

You can build a intake yourself "fairly" easily if you use a few basic calculations and enable the use of adjustable runners for tuning. This of course will be a standard DIY type of project and not yield results on PAR with those made by AMS or Veilside etc, there's a reason they are $1000.

I have often thought of building my own just to try it. I have a spare head I can mount to a bench and a spare intake mani to cut apart. I'd really prefer to not use any of the stock manifold though, not even the flange. That is however, not a project I'll be undertaking anytime soon.

The stock s13 SR20 intake manifold is VERY similar in size and shape and length as the KA.

The Greddy intake manifold is proven to make power, with dyno sheets everywhere (on SR ofcourse

I think i've decided im going to go through with this hackjob and trying it myself.

I think I'm going to do this myself as well. I have an extra intake manifold and the knockoff greddy's are fairly cheap on the good ole ebay. I don't see why not.

Just make sure to CLEAN THE INSIDE of the freddy intake manifold because i heard the knockoffs have alot of casting flakes and crap on the insides.

Yeah, i had heard that too. If I actually do this I'm going to grind out all the casting marks on the runners and anything else I can get to.

I picked up this for my s13 ka24det. I paid about $500 as well and as soon as i got it I was not to impressed. Performance wise I cant tell if there were any gains since It was installed with the turbo. Also the hood on the s13 will not close 100%, s14 will have no problem. Next ka24det I will just try to make one myself. It did look good after I painted it.
