I recently purchased an engagement ring for my (now) fiancee. Its a bluish green sapphire, round cut, along with a palladium band and bezel setting with a small window. It did not fit off the bat and we had to have it re-sized (1.5 sizes) with the jeweler. The ring came back and fit well, however about 2 weeks later, the stone was very loose in the setting. I made mention of this to the jeweler (since there is a lifetime guarantee) and was told that palladium was more malleable than gold and that they could tighten the bezel and make it work.
Now, this would be a good time to tell you we originally chose palladium (based on the Mohs and Brinnell scales) and a bezel so that the ring would be able to stand up to vigorous daily activities such as typing, walking, and driving. We take good care of the ring and it comes off during exercise, bathing, yard work, etc. Anyway, we sent the ring back to have the bezel tightened. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain palladium is a tougher metal than gold. But I digress.
The work was completed and we received the ring this evening and were kind of surprised by what we saw. The repair to "tighten" up the loose sapphire left the ring looking very different than it originally appeared when I made the initial purchase. The repair looks as if a good deal of extra material was added to one side, leaving the bezel looking uneven, bulky, and the stone looking un-centered and lopsided (though still very deep and colorful). However, the result is that the setting does not look correct or proportional at all anymore. This really isn't the repair we expected and are very surprised with the quality of the work done since the rest of our experience and service has been excellent.
My questions to you all are:
- is this what a typical repair for tightening a bezel looks like?
- if not, what should they have done and what can I request they do?
- I feel as if the rerounding the ring after sizing upset the seat prepared for the stone inside the bezel and is no longer flat and even and may be no longer suitable for the stone. Am I correct (or even on the right track?) with that assumption?
Thank you all in advance for the help, I just don't know how to approach this with the jeweler.
