Hello All - just found this site yesterday at work...thank goodness for the holidays and slow days at work. I recently purchased a 98Q45t and I absolutely love it. I added the stilen exhaust imediately and am now looking at the jetchip. Does anyone have any experience with the performance enhancement of this chip. Jetchip says 17-20 HP.Thanks for any input...

I think the 17-20 is probably as standard Jetchip quotes. I was unaware of EcU upgrades on anything past 96...maybe that's just for JWT. Most people here trust nothing else but Jim Wolf ECU's. Check his site at http://www.jimwolftechnology.com . JWT is pretty much the standard for Nissan.Welcome to NICO Chaz

I checked into the JWT ECU upgrade - they don't make it for the 2nd gen Q. They said maybe in a year or so. I was playing around on the internet and found out that jetchip makes the computer upgrade the 2nd gen Q's....I had a jetchip on my 98 Chevy Silverado and I could definitely tell a difference. But I was hoping someone had installed the jetchip and could let me know if they could notice a difference...I need some huge help. Where do I go to change the "Driving Mom's Car" underneath my name, I've been trying to for 10 minutes - that's embarrassing...

In general post 1995 Nissan can't be up graded [ecu chip wise] because there is no single chip which contains the WOT specifications. The fuel and ignition is CALCULATED based on air flow and the alogrithms [there are 40 of them] have a safety factor added to add to longevity.........much software has to be rewritten vs just changing a look up table on a pre 1996 car.

That said I am sure you could trick the system into thinking more air was flowing in or the intake temperature was colder/hotter [what most do] as each 11F changes the density by 1%....hotter air would be thinner and need less gasoline colder air would be thicker and need more.

Most engines are way too rich at WOT for maximum power so contrary to what most think less gasoline flow is usually what makes power increases [not much say 5-10% less].

The problem is the fuel needs to be leaner and leaner as you get above 4,000/6,000 rpm ..........guess you could make a go lean switch.

In Summer Redline Wetter water and 25% AF will increase power output by lowering cylinder head temperature -- lets more heat transfer into the coolant ..[so you can run leaner]......but the problem is the coolant temp sensor sees the heat increase and protectively lowers the ignition advance so nothing may happen [you gotta fool the coolant temp sensor so that it never reads above 194F] a summer switch!

Some of the above is what the JWT did to increase power plus just removing half the 15% safety factor yielding close to a 10% power increase.

Many of the post 1996 OBD2 "" CHIPS""" do nothing too much work for too few sales.....it cost JWT $50,000 to do the dyno testing reprogramming for their chip and they never broke even on Q sales......they needed to sell 300 and I understand they sold half that number.....in 10 years. So 150 people sprung for the upgrade out of 50,000 that could accept it.....3/10th%.......about the number of Q owners on this board and I would be surprised if one of 10 had a JWT chip!

Hopefully you see the economic problem when less than 42,000 of the 96 -01 were sold and less than 5,000 of the 02/03Q/M45.

Don't go into the chip ecu reprogramming business!

Chaz, how did the Stillen Exhaust work out? could you tell the difference? I have a 97Qt as well and really like it. most of the guys on the board are first gen's and look down at us as "Lexified" but I love my 97' and plan to drive it for a long time to come.

BTW, I now have a 92' that my dad has given my wife, it is a great car but I wouldn't trade. Let me know if the Stillen exhaust was worth it!

Your title "moms car" will change/improve as you make more pots on the board and singifies to how we all grow here. You will get cooler and cooler singnatures after a while.

Jeff - I love my Stillen exhaust. I'm not really sure if I can tell any performance difference..but it sounds much better. It's not loud unless you stomp on it - then it's got a nice sound - not loud but much better than stock. Looks much better also - nice and chromed out...

Cool, I've been thinking about buying and I think i will after I do the new tires and rims. I bought a set of 17" rims a few months ago and I'm waiting for the 16" tires to wear out. They claim 8 more horse due to exhaust, you think you got that? Also, when you're at freeway cruise is it still quiet?

Yeah - probably 8 hp. I got the exhaust and put it on the first week I got the Q - so I didn't have a good "feel" for the hp before I installed the exhaust. The car is definitely quiet at hiway speeds - unless you open it up, then it's got a really nice sound. I am wanting to buy 17 inch rims for my Q also...let me know how it rides after you put them on..I would definitely add the Stillen exhaust - I think they are still on sale for $260 or something like that...it's a steal...

Ya, I just checked they are only $245, I think I will order one and get it installed when I get my rims put on..seems like cheap upgrade and I'm certainly after more ponies in my car.

Another question, did it install without any mods, just bolted righ in???

Very easy to install - just bolts right on, the stock exhaust weighs a ton compared to the Stillen exhaust. If you have a trailer hitch like me (for the waverunner :-) then you will probably need to have someone put it on for you because they need to do some custom welding...

Thanks, nope I don't have any trailor hitch and I've got nothing to tow. Sounds like that is a no-brainer upgrade at some point in the near future. Thanks!

Yes - bigger diameter...helps the exhaust "breath" better so it creates a few more HP.

You can buy it off the Stillen Web site for like 250 bucks. That is probably the easiest way to get one.

Looks like we are finally getting a real third Gen Q45 crowd here.Pretty cool I think

I still might join you guys, one of the 2 Q's I am looking at is a 3rd Gen the other a 1st gen.

Fred...:)

PS: There is some debate on generations but most accept this division:

1stGen 90-932ndGen 94-963rd gen 97-014th Gen 02+

Palmerwmd - I am EXTREMELY surprised that there aren't a lot more 3rd gen. Q folks on here...seems as though most are 1st & 2nd...90-96 Q's. I absolutely love driving my 98Q. Your signature says front and rear Stillen sway bars. My 98Q45t has a front sway bar - not sure if it has a rear sway bar. Do you know. If it doesn't would you recommend getting a rear one - I do drive aggressively quite often - best I can get since I don't race motorcycles anymore....

Rear sway bars are on the t models.

I think the rear tower brace is a JDM only standard equipment, or option for the Cima. Notice they appear in the US on the 350Z and Infiniti coupes (where they are better hidden).

Perfectly happy with the first Gen Q. Besides I think it still has a timeless look to it no matter what. call me crazy, and I am still loving the Silverstar lights I have on. Wooo hoooooo

3rd gen cars aren't breaking down enough yet for their owners to seek NICO out. That, plus factory output wasn't exactly spectacular.

Quote »3rd gen cars aren't breaking down enough yet for their owners to seek NICO out[/quote] They two 2002 Q45s I know about are both leased. I am thinking at this point the lower numerical differential of the 2002 might be more desirable to me, because these cars scoot quite nicely. It is not worth it to me to sacrifice even 1 mpg for .3 seconds quicker to 60 at WOT.

I will examine where the shift points occur also. Effortless cruising and passing on the highway is where these cars excell.
