If the oil filter is on the passenger side of the engine, its a USDM. If it's on the driver's side, it's a JDM. Because the steering is on the other side in Japan (RHD), they moved the oil filter tree to the other side.

^^^ True, but I believe you need to swap the oil fiter tree over to the other side, before dropping the motor in.

Edit: just looked at my jdm motor, and the oil filter is on the same side as my usdm motor. The difference is only the oil pressure sender location.

ahhh that's what I meant to say. I wrote that when I was way too tired lol there wouldn't be any place to put the oil filter tree unless the blocks were different. Can you see the JDM oil sender unit easily from the side its on? Or is it buried in there

How much is he selling it for? Any reason you want this one in particular? JDM engines are known to be headaches, if he has it high priced, my be worth to look for an actual 300zxTT, not swapped from an NA. Not trying to deter you, just curious.

To answer your question, only difference I noticed was the vin and the oil pressure sending unit with my swap. Another way to see if it was actually a swap is to see if he has HICAS, if he doesn't, more than likely it was swapped, more than likely with a JDM engine.

he's askin 4000 i went and looked at it last night. the swap looks like it was done very well and seems very mechanically sound. the car does have a few cosmetic issues though but that seems to be all. how much are these swap cars usually going for these days?

It mostly depends on the condition. Swaps always sell for less than factory TT's obviously, but they are still worth a good amount of money. If it was mint condition he could maybe get 10k or so for it, unless it was a fully built one pushing 500+ hp or something. 4k is reasonable if it's in good condition without mechanical issues

yeah most drivers seats on these cars will be torn up just from wear and tear over 20 years. As long as the body is solid and not rusting away or dented to hell then you should be fine. You could do a compression test on the engine if the owner was willing to if you wanted to know a more detailed health of the engine

If your gonna replace it, now would be the best time to just get a JDM bumper. They are about the same price, sometimes you can get it cheaper. Always a clean look.

And for 4k, that is really not a horrible price, just make sure you read up on the JDM motor horror stories. I have one, and have no issues with it, did the swap myself, well other than injectors. If you are going to do a compression, just make sure its warmed up, battery fully charged, all plugs out and throttle bodies open when your testing, along with the proper fuses/relays pulled. All of those will affect your readings.
