I was at a shop that does a lot of SR swaps and what not. I have been asking around for a KA24de to replace mine which currently has 171,000 miles on it and it is using a qt. of oil a week now if not more. So it is in bad shape... but my question is the guy told me he can get a jdm KA that had low mileage on it? is the true? I figured the KA was just a USDM engine or was it used in the trucks in Japan also?

I think they are truck engines and a car of some sort... cannot remember. I almost bought one though... even came with a 6K mile warranty. Instead, I opted for the HIGH dollar option.

why import an engine readily available in the states. You can get a KA24DE for 300-500 bucks which is probably about what you would pay to import one on top of the cost of it.

Not sure if it's true, but I heard that there was a KA edition of the silvia in the 89-90 years, but it was dropped.

well yes they do come in trucks in japan, the reason we don't have sr20det's here is that when 240's were introduced to northamerica there was not a high demand for turbo engines

The motor for 300-500 and another 300-500 for shipping/handling and customs fees. Plus it'll take a while for the motor to arrive. Just save the $ and use it to build up the KA.

I personally know nothing about the following company, but http://www.nippon-motors.com sells JDM KA motors for $650.

The KA motor comes in the nissan largo vans in Japan. I don't know of any other vehicles with the KA but I didn't go around looking for them either. You won't find any KA motors in pickup trucks in japan because they don't have pickups like the ones we have in the states. The only pickups are the K-tora which are puny little things and the old datsun and toyota pickups from back in the 70's

the reason for the KA was that the sr20 would be too much of a competion for the NA 300z's and seeing the 300 was their premire sports car why make their mid range sports car to be faster then the base model 300

Old thread, I know, but this is relevant info to the subject (read this before & remembered it when I found a JDM KA).

The JDM KA does come from the Largo van, also the newer Nissan van that the JDM motors come out of is the Presage:http://pravo.ruz.net/catalog/espec/313

I just ordered one from http://asapmotors.com for about $900. Sounds high, but I couldn't find a JY motor in TX w/ less than 110k on it. This way, I've got a solid low miles motor with factory reliability. The vendor says it's plug & play, no EGR mismatches or anything wierd. The HP rating is a bit lower, and the torque is a bit higher, but my guess is that's just because of a more restrictive intake/exhaust. Same compression, bore/stroke, so it should be identical to the 240's KA. Won't matter too much to me since I'll be boosting it anyways.I'll find out this weekend when I swap it for my noisy, knocking, 150k KA.

um, you should have just asked us here ;)I can pick up KA's with less than 30k miles for about 900 here locally. Or have one completely built to your specs for not much more.

Ahhhhh...

Search on http://www.car-part.com, and you get MANY '97-98 motors, ranging from $500 to $1000.

And from the link you posted it says the compression is 9.2:1..which is OK for turbo, but I wouldn't want to drop if staying N/A.

I actually found ASAPMotors.com on car-part.com. I use that site constantly.

Going rebuilt worried me unless it's a local builder I can trust and work with if there are issues. Reliability of an OEM setup is nice.

Buying a JY motor out of state is tough because I can't pick it up, or I'll get raped on freight.

The quoted 9.2:1 compression ratio appears to be a misquoted figure among lots of sources (including the Chilton's manual, for example). I figured if it was in fact lower it'll just be all the better for the boost ;)

Got the motor tonight. Looks to be well worth it. I was suprised to see a distributor in there. Popping the oil filler cap off, the inside looks pretty tidy. Shiny and spotless clean inside & out. Came with a very good clutch that I may just use until I get the turbo stuff together (need to do auto->manual swap before the turbo setup). Definitely better than I was expecting for used.
